This & That Thursday

I know.

I have been a horrible blogger and practically non-existent as a photographer. And I have been even worse at visiting and seeing what all my bloggy friends are up to. I am trying very hard to get back into some sort of routine but instead of getting easier, it seems more and more impossible. Maybe our routine, that “normal,” just doesn’t exist any more.

DSC_0088.jpg

Anyhow, this week we are back to bullet points because despite my attempt to carve out some time for this, I have about five minutes to try to document everything from the past week. So bullets it is…

  • All of our October commitments are finally finished. The Pumpkin Patch at Addie’s school – The Fall Carnival at Em’s school. The past few weeks have been crazy with obligations (mostly mine because I cannot say no) for both of them. But they are done. Bring on November, I say.
  • DSC_0041.jpg

  • And I have a very good start on Halloween costumes. What? I have nearly 24 hours before Em needs hers for school! Plenty of time. We are having a little Halloween party for Addie and a few of her friends because they do not get to dress up at school. So I have at least 30-ish hours for hers. I’m mostly re-purposing old costumes for them, so really it should be easy.
  • Despite all of my complaining about craziness, we have been able to have a little fun this past week. J’s mom and friend are here and have afforded us cheap babysitters for two different evenings out in the past four days. (Thanks, Debby & Barb!)
  • First up, gotta give props to U2 and Sunday night’s concert. Incredible. They are one band who can pull off a huge stadium crammed with 95,000+ fans and still put on a great show. And the Black Eyed Peas opened for them and I didn’t realize how much I liked them until after I saw them either. Great show!
  • And we got to be totally spontaneous this week, too! J. called me (very) last minute on Tuesday because he had scored tix to the Lakers season opener. That was pretty fun, too. I liked people watching (trying to spy celebrities) and um…watching the Lakers win too, of course.
  • Addie has decided she is going to be a veterinarian when she grows up. But she doesn’t want to help snakes. When we asked her if she wanted to work with small animals like cats and dogs (knowing full well this was probably the case) or big animals, like elephants and other animals at the zoo, she said, “only little animals like bunnies, kitties and baby elephants!”

DSC_0004.jpg

  • We have pumpkins to carve still. Blech. I hate the pumpkin guts.
  • 55 days til Christmas, just in case you were unaware and haven’t visited the Hallomas (or Christoween) decorations at Target.  Addie was very concerned when we were in Target one day and she thought she had missed Halloween. “Mama? Did Halloween already go by? Is it Christmas now?” I had to stop and reassure myself that it was indeed a few weeks BEFORE Halloween, and yes, there are Christmas decorations out already. Poor Thanksgiving. It really does get the shaft.
  • I have, however, started Christmas shopping and craft planning for gifts. So I feel a little smug and cocky.
  • Ah, don’t worry. I’ll be behind again by the time next week rolls around.

Happy Thursday, everyone.

Crafty Tuesday

I knew I could depend on all of you to offer us your advice, suggestions, and encouragement on our new endeavor! Thanks so very much, we took all of it in and are working it out. The logo is going through round 2 right now, and Jamie (friend/business partner Jamie, not hubby Jamie!) and I had our first business meeting this week where we changed the name to Two Birdies Workshop. Jamie suggested it, and I love it! We couldn’t just use Two Birdies since twobirdies.com is already taken, so that is why I was trying to add something to it. Two Birdies Design seemed too limiting. And I wasn’t completely sold on Two Birdies Creations, but when Jamie said ‘Workshop‘ I knew that was it. It is versatile, we can pull it off and use it for many projects.

And we decided that we are going to see what we can get made in time for the Holiday Boutique at Ad’s school – which is December 4th. So, we have one month to get it all together. And then we’ll see what we can put up in Etsy and maybe shop it around to some little boutiques.

We have also created our “menu.” We aer going to make aprons, pillowcase dresses, reusable tote bags, and bags for kids, stationery and SuperCapes.

Lounge pants we decided are hard to “size” and also take a lot of fabric, so the profit margin is kinda high on those. And the birthday banners, are pretty time consuming as well. I may make some for our Etsy store at a later date, but we are not going to make any for the first round here.

I’ll tell you what else I will not be making. Any of these &$#*! Japanese felt animals. The only reason I finally finished these was they were taking up my endtable in the living room and I was sick of looking at them. That and the girls kept asking “when will the deer be done, Mama?”

So they are gladly done, and we are moving on. Bigger and better things!

Crafty Tuesday

Hello, my crafty gurus.

I don’t have any new creations to show this week. I have been creating flyers and signage for one of the school’s Pumpkin Patch (last weekend), signs for the Carnival (this weekend) at the other school, Daisy troop posters and handouts, and lots of bake sale goods for everything…and I just haven’t been able to *craft* anything for myself, or for gifts. I keep thinking as soon as October is over, I’ll have plenty of time. Right? Riiight.

I have been throwing around the idea of opening a little etsy shop with personalized stationery, announcements, cards, etc. But then I figured out that what I really like doing is the tactile stuff – the sewing – the big projects – not the stuff behind a computer. So I was thinking up names and ideas the other day (in case I ever might want to really sell something) and I kept going back to my favorite little Birdies. And then it became Two Birdies (in honor of my own two little birdies!). And then I played with the logo a bit. And then I got busy and promptly forgot about all of it.

Until today. Some friends who are putting on the Holiday Boutique at Ad’s school planted the seed that I should put some pillowcase dresses in the Boutique and try to make some money, they think they would really sell. And then we started talking about other crafts that we I could put together.

And this is where you come in, my crafty gurus.  I need some help. I do think I want to try to get some stuff together. But what do you think I should concentrate or focus on? Here’s the laundry list. If you were Christmas shopping – which of these things might you buy?

Aprons
Lounge pants
Birthday banners
Reusable bags
Kids tote bags / ballet bags
Super capes!
Or what about personalized stationery, cute thank you notes, etc?

But, wait…two-part question, here.

What do you think of the name “Two Birdies Creations?” Too long? Too much? Two cutesy?

Well, actually I lied. Three-part question. Do any of these logos strike your fancy? I’m not quite sure about any of them yet, but I have a leaning. I’ll see what you think.

Okay. That is your assignment. Discuss. I expect your answers on my desktop by the end of day.

(Just kidding…but I do appreciate all of your artistic eyes and any thoughts!)

This & That Thursday

Limping, crawling, dragging…

…but, hey! We are here. Sheeeweeew. It has been a really long week.

Let’s kick off This & That with our crazy Addie expression for the week:

DSC_0180.jpg

I know it isn’t really in focus, but trying to capture all of her crazy faces, while she is moving at the speed of light, is a feat all unto itself.

My happiest moment this week? Monday night around 7:30pm when Addie’s mouth finally stopped moving. I know, I know…someday I’m going to miss this. But! Oh.My.Peas. Seriously?

Ad didn’t have school, but Em did, so Addie just followed me around and talked. Non-stop. We were in JoAnn Fabrics right when they opened, so we were the only ones in the store. And I kid you not, when we got up to the checkout the salesperson was cracking up when she said, “Wow, did she have some coffee this morning or what? It is only 9:30am and she is good to go!” She did not stop talking the entire time.

And then we went over to do our bi-monthly Costco run, and the running commentary just continued. There was a brief respite when Em got home, but…CHATTERBOX! Wow.

DSC_0104.jpg

And then Wednesday was Em’s day with no school due to Parent/Teacher conferences. There was much less chattiness with Em, and she was just thrilled to pieces when her two friends got to come over and relieve her from spending time with her MOM!

Or maybe she just still traumatized by me taking her on California Screamin’ at Disneyland last weekend. Hee. It is a very fun rollercoaster and Em asked me while we were in line, “Does this go upside down, Mama?” I told her I didn’t think so, but I had never been on it before.

It does. Of course. After we did the upside-down loop she said to me, “Mama?! Did we go upside-down?” I said, “Yeah! Did you miss it?”

“I think I had my eyes closed. It was scary. I don’t like the upside-down, but I do like the fast up and down parts.”

That’s my girl.

DSC_0138.jpg

The past two days have been awesome, very atypical, fall-like weather for Southern California. We had some storms! It was really nice to have a few days of chilly, rainy weather and it was satisfying to pull out the ‘ol sweaters.

Of course, all I really wanted to do was curl up in front of the fire and finish reading my books. I’m re-reading the Harry Potter series – it is even better the second third time around. I keep trying to assess whether they are too dark to start reading to Em. I can’t wait to read them with her! Although we have been reading Little House on the Prairie, and there are some pretty serious parts in there. Like Indian attacks, massacres, etc. I had forgotten about most of that (it was at least 25 years ago when I last read them!) and I cannot just skip over things anymore, either. “Eagle-eyed” Emma will correct me if I dare try to “trim” off any words.

DSC_0103.jpg

And if I can just brag for a moment? She is reading at a 3rd grade reading level. And is plowing through her timed math tests. And will be in the group that gets a specialized spelling test each week – because the normal one is too easy. Miss Smartypants. Her teacher basically said in her conference today, “Um, I don’t really have anything I need you to work on with her. Just keep doing what you are doing.”

DSC_0161.jpg

That is validating, for sure. And I’m very proud of her. My friend Jamie said, “She is like a mushroom. She can be shut in a dark place given a little water and she will still thrive.”

DSC_0170.jpg

So very true. Only it is Addie we need to shut in a dark place for bit. My ears are still ringing. Or maybe it is Harry Potter calling to me. Or maybe I’m just very, very tired.

Happy Thursday to you all…

Mmmmwwwaaahh!

Crafty Tuesday

This isn’t a post so much about my craftiness, but a little shout-out to my friend over at New Green Mama, who crafts some true magic with up-cycled goods.

I have sung her praises here before, her owls are to die for. Mine still hangs out on my desk, keeping me company and making me smile every time I look at her.

And my coffee cozy – it might have started my slight infatuation with little birdies. (Nah, I can’t blame that on you, Jen!) I use it all the time. Even when I bring my re-usable mug from home I  still use my cozy on it and sometimes I have to wrestle one of the girls for it, since they like it so much, too.

DSC_0004.jpg

I have seen some little kitties, bunnies, and other creatures created with felt, and really wanted to try felting some sweaters to see if I could manage some sort of kid Christmas presents. (I also have a new niece or nephew on the way – wouldn’t a cute, soft little creature be a good way to welcome a new baby to the world?)

So when Jen made her coffee cozy diy kit available, I thought “how cool.” I would start small and see what it was all about.

So, the kit is adorable. I wish I had taken a photo when I opened it – the packaging is great. But in my great haste to tear it open and get started I wasn’t thinking so clearly and didn’t snap a photo until after.

DSC_0006.jpg

And…the kit is so fun! And I did it while watching the Amazing Race on Sunday night. I love having something productive to do while I’m watching TV instead of what I’m usually doing. (That would be…um, blogging. Like right now.)

So it is quick and easy and very satisfying to have a Christmas present done. Although I might reattach the little Owly’s eyes with just white. She looks like she has pink eyelashes…and I’m not really digging that. But the rest of it…very cute!

DSC_0003.jpg

I am going to give this to Em’s teacher for Christmas with a reusable cup and Sbux card. Emma told me that she ALWAYS has a cup of coffee from Starbucks, and I’ve run into her at our Starbucks, so I think it is one gift that will definitely be used and appreciated!

Now I’m jacked up to get started on some other handcrafted presents. Right after I finish those pesky Halloween costumes. I have three weeks. That is practically an eternity. No worries. 🙂

What about all of you? Got some crafty goodies to share? How about ideas for Christmas presents to make for GUYS? Got any of those?

This & That Thursday

Thursday again? That was a quick week!

DSC_0023.jpg

Poor Addikins. Did you happen to hear the screams yesterday? She had to have 5 shots. (That is 1, 2, 3, 4, FIVE!!!) It was terrifying. For Mommy. I got a flu shot first to show her how easy it was and then had to HOLD.HER.DOWN. while she was stuck five times. Did I mention she had five shots? The poor thing. It was a wee bit traumatic.

DSC_0034.jpg

Therefore, pretty much anything Miss Addie wanted yesterday, she got. “Mama? My tummy really thinks it wants McDonald’s for lunch.”

Done.

“I will go up and pick out my own clothes for the park, Mama.”

Alrighty then.

DSC_0038.jpg

Yep. She really did go out like that. And, Yep. I really did tell her she looked fabulous.
All I know is…my arm aches. Those flu shots don’t mess around. Ouch.

J. is on the first of his whirlwind October travels and we are all missing him already. So to fill our afternoon we headed to the park, after we picked Em up from Chess Masters that is. Yes, you read that right. Chess Masters. She came home so psyched last week about the club that teaches you to play chess! And you get to play with a life-sized chess board!

So, we said, why not? It might make for some craziness for a few years, but she needs to explore and figure out what really gets her excited. Now when Addie gets to this stage and I can’t keep up with the two of them, I’m going to have to put my foot down and make them start choosing. But for now, she has added Chess Master to her repertoire.

DSC_0025.jpg

I think that taking a break from my camera, is very smart for me. I feel like I get to the point where I get stale and uninspired. And then after a few weeks of not looking through my viewfinder, I find that I am pleasantly surprised when I download my photos at the end of the day.

My new favorite photo of Em…

DSC_0013.jpg

This one isn’t too bad either. I love it when she scrunches her nose up like this.

DSC_0019.jpg

I have high hopes that this weekend is going to be productive and relaxing at the same time. That is possible isn’t it?
