Crafty Tuesday

Hello, my crafty gurus.

I don’t have any new creations to show this week. I have been creating flyers and signage for one of the school’s Pumpkin Patch (last weekend), signs for the Carnival (this weekend) at the other school, Daisy troop posters and handouts, and lots of bake sale goods for everything…and I just haven’t been able to *craft* anything for myself, or for gifts. I keep thinking as soon as October is over, I’ll have plenty of time. Right? Riiight.

I have been throwing around the idea of opening a little etsy shop with personalized stationery, announcements, cards, etc. But then I figured out that what I really like doing is the tactile stuff – the sewing – the big projects – not the stuff behind a computer. So I was thinking up names and ideas the other day (in case I ever might want to really sell something) and I kept going back to my favorite little Birdies. And then it became Two Birdies (in honor of my own two little birdies!). And then I played with the logo a bit. And then I got busy and promptly forgot about all of it.

Until today. Some friends who are putting on the Holiday Boutique at Ad’s school planted the seed that I should put some pillowcase dresses in the Boutique and try to make some money, they think they would really sell. And then we started talking about other crafts that we I could put together.

And this is where you come in, my crafty gurus.  I need some help. I do think I want to try to get some stuff together. But what do you think I should concentrate or focus on? Here’s the laundry list. If you were Christmas shopping – which of these things might you buy?

Aprons
Lounge pants
Birthday banners
Reusable bags
Kids tote bags / ballet bags
Super capes!
Or what about personalized stationery, cute thank you notes, etc?

But, wait…two-part question, here.

What do you think of the name “Two Birdies Creations?” Too long? Too much? Two cutesy?

Well, actually I lied. Three-part question. Do any of these logos strike your fancy? I’m not quite sure about any of them yet, but I have a leaning. I’ll see what you think.

Okay. That is your assignment. Discuss. I expect your answers on my desktop by the end of day.

(Just kidding…but I do appreciate all of your artistic eyes and any thoughts!)

  1. SO SO exciting, Carrie. I would buy all of that (and I actually have.) Really. And I love the last design because of the bright green/yellow color. Good luck, keep us posted.

  2. First design is my fave but I had better get Himself’s opinions :-) Name works. I too think all those ideas are buyable. I actually saw some ‘banners’ like yours used in a shop display recently. They were hung over kids’ beds in a manchester department. Very cool.

I am elbow deep in mock ups of the BA’s weddingy bridemaidy dress thingy at the moment….not to mention I still have two rows of the top of the quilt to finish, so nothing to post :-(
Today I cut up an old sheet to try making the skirt part of her dress…..and messed it up. Then the family told me they didn’t like the bodice, it was too ‘heavy’…sheeshhh……

  3. Even though i really like brown and blue together, I like the last design with the green and blue birds – looks very bright and cheery. As for the list of stuff – I would get any of it i am sure but the lounge pants and bags would be top on my list – when are they going on sale?? :)

  4. I would think that the lounge pants would be a good sell, but I like your list in its entirety. And while I think the third logo is my favorite, you did a great job with all three. :) Two birdies, that is totally you!

  5. Wow Bean what a great idea ! All of the logo’s are great but I do like the last one best.
    Love
    Mom

  6. My vote is also for the last logo. I love the name too.

I think all of the items that you listed would sell well. If I was Christmas shopping I would have a really hard time deciding what to buy. I especially love your capes, lounge pants, and banners. It is so easy to get overwhelmed with all of the stuff you could make. The only problem I see with the lounge pants is knowing what sizes to make. I think you should make the items that you enjoy making the most. Also items that are easy to produce in volume without too much headache.

Can’t wait to see what you decide to make.

  7. I’m thinking you could leave off the creations part myself. Two Birdies is a cute little phrase and easy to remember too all by itself. I like your tote bags myself. Very cute and the right size for a preschooler too. My son would love one with a 4 wheeler picture on it to use as his library bag. ;) So I would go with the bag.

As for stationary, thank you notes for sure.

  8. Good for you! I really like that last logo and love the name. You can leave off creations if you want…I like it either way.

I think all your items would be good sellers, honestly. What you need to do is sit down and figure out what would be easiest to do, use the least amount of fabric and give you the most bang for you cost and time. I think they would all sell well, but your bags, capes and aprons are kind of one size fits all and would probably sell better.

  9. How exciting! I’m going to echo many of the above comments and say that I totally want me some lounge pants…love the birthday banner (or personalized with names), and the super cape is such a cool idea for a gift!

I too feel like Two Birdies minus Creations feels better. Maybe it’s the English teacher in me that leaves me wondering if it should be possessive, or plural possessive…anyway, it’s a line of thinking that takes me away from the cuteness of your items!

Personally I really like the first logo the best…something about the brown-ness of the birdies. Can’t wait to hear more about your exciting venture! Have a great week!

  10. Go for it!!! Oh my yes, you will be fantastic at this Carrie! All your stuff is so cute, and you have such a mind for business. Love the name Two Birdies and it’s perfect for you – and I also agree that it’s fine with or w/out the “Creations.” The logos are all great, and my vote is for the last one. The blue and green combo is so fun and whimsical together. Maybe a brown eye on each one to pull the brown back out, tho?

I think all your ideas would sell well, but I especially love the banners, reuseable bags and the capes. I think you should make decisions on which items would be the most time & money efficient. I also think the stationary can do well, but if you don’t like the idea of spending time on it – then don’t sell that, it should all be stuff you enjoy! On the other hand, once you have your designs in place it would take very little time to put together stationary orders – all profit!

    Go Carrie!

  11. Love the font in the first logo. Ahem…definitely think the bags in a bigger size would be a seller (**), although the lounge pants are cute on my daughter, though I’ve not gotten to try any on. (**hints**) :)

  12. All 3 logos are great… As well as all your fabulous products… I do like the 1st and last logo best. Much luck to you.

  13. I love the brown birds, but I also love the symmetry of the last logo. So I guess I’d keep tweaking. :) Really, though, I think any of the logos are great.

Not to be a party-pooper, but I have one other thought: are you sure you want to give yourself more work to do, when you’ve felt so overwhelmed (time-wise) lately? It’s clear that crafting is a wonderful, fun activity for you (and you make beautiful stuff!), but sometimes one more thing – even a fun thing – is too much.

Personally, I have to remind myself almost every day to say “no” to something. There are so many worthwhile activities in the world, but I have to remember that I’ll enjoy life more if I do less.

That being said, I think any of your ideas are easily sell-able.

  14. I love the font of the first but I think I like the design of the last. However, I don’t think that font works with that design . . . but maybe.

We’re “bag hogs” here. We have to make ourselves put bags back with a “I do not need another bag” so I’m totally for the bags. Love them.

  15. My gut said #1 but my head says #3…I’m hoping I am the silent second bird because I’m headed to the garage to set up the sweatshop right now. We need to get downtown and I think a mix of all on the list would be great, quick reality check, let’s see – its Oct. 21, the sweatshop requires a rather large garage cleanup. Then there’s the shopping and the making with firm deadline boutique on Dec. 4th. Quick factor-in of the 5 children we have between us… me PTA Prez, you Daisy Leader, I think “whatever we can get done” is probably as good as this business plan is going to get :) Let’s amaze ourselves shall we?

  16. I like #3 a lot but the brown birds caught my eye in #1. I would but birthday banners, super capes and aprons. I am so excited to see your shop, I know you well enough to know that you wouldn’t go this far into it and not start it up!!

Oh, PS-I love the name too! :)

  17. YAY!!!! I really like the number one logo… and I’d shop for a list of things you provided, especially aprons, loungers, and a birthday banner. Of course, I’m probably the only one here who doesn’t have little ones around yet, but when I do, I’ll be sure to check it all out. Go you. I think you should do it!

  18. Yes yes yes! Open an etsy shop! I think the super capes would go over so well and the birthday banners too. Really all of it would, those are just what I’m looking for! And on the logo, I like the last one the best. It’s just classy but chic.

  19. Oh man…. I am so far behind. Over a week behind? Gah!

Anyway…. love love love this idea. When you’ve posted about making some of these things I’m totally thought that I would buy them if you were selling them.

First of all… the birdies…. LOVE them.

    Let’s see….
    Aprons – eh
Lounge pants – totally…. can I get them now for me and Zoe… and I think Ana too? : )
Birthday banners – I buy a new throw away banner every year and would TOTALLY buy one of these. And one for each of my sister-in-laws too.
Reusable bags – I feel you can never have too many bags
Kids tote bags / ballet bags – same
    Super capes! – Absolutely

And the logos… well… I do like the first one because the writing in more crafty like. And the brown birds stand out. But, I also like the blue/green/brown. Can you mesh them together?

I can not wait to see how this goes for you. And… if you get it going soon I already know what gifts I can get for the nieces and nephews for Christmas!!!
