Soaking up every last drop ~ Best Shot Monday

I actually didn’t take too many photos this weekend. We spent a little time in front of the camera when Rose agreed to take some family photos, and I snapped this on our way home from the beach. Trying to soak in that last bit of tranquility before December descends upon us. And all (cuss)* breaks loose!

*We also got to see Fantastic Mr. Fox this weekend. Might be one of the best movies, no wait…it was by far one of the best movies I’ve seen in months! We had intended to go see it for the kids. While the girls liked it, I think you could say J. and I LOVED it.

The “What the cuss?” line is my favorite line from it. And yes, I have put it into rotation.

40 years.

40years.jpg

40 years. My parents are celebrating 40 years of marriage today. 4-0!

I’m at a loss for words here. Every time I try to write something eloquent celebrating this great achievement, I just think FORTY years! I mean that is a long time to pick up someone’s dirty socks (Uh, not that my dad – or any husband I know – leaves dirty socks lying around), and a long time to be nagged with “honey-do” lists. (Again, not that my mom – or any wife out there – has ever had to do a little nagging!)

So, instead – I’ll let the professionals take this one. I found this quote that really reveals what I think a time-tested, true love looks like. This is from the movie Captain Corelli’s Mandolin:

“Love is a temporary madness. It erupts like an earthquake and then subsides. And when it subsides you have to make a decision. You have to work out whether your roots have become so entwined together that it is inconceivable that you should ever part. Because this is what love is. Love is not breathlessness, it is not excitement, it is not the promulgation of promises of eternal passion. That is just being “in love” which any of us can convince ourselves we are. Love itself is what is left over when being in love has burned away, and this is both an art and a fortunate accident. Your mother and I had it, we had roots that grew towards each other underground, and when all the pretty blossom had fallen from our branches we found that we were one tree and not two.”
-St. Augustine

Here is to you and your love, Mom and Dad. That your roots may continue to grow together into an even stronger tree for many more years.

We love you! Happy Anniversary!

Crafty Tuesday

I hinted last week that I might have a dress or two to show you today.

And here they are…I know my mother-in-law has been waiting to see these, since she helped me scour the flea market for some good vintage pillowcases to re-purpose into these sweet little dresses.

As I was scrambling to get a few photos I realized, I need to find a good spot to photograph all this stuff, especially for when we need to put them in the shop. The photos are not the best, and the lighting and color is all off. And I might need a cute little model or two for them. Wonder if I might be able to find one?

Addie’s fave dress is the first one (with the cats, of course) and she keeps asking me if we don’t sell that one if she can “buy it?” Maybe she and I can work out some sort of modeling deal in trade for clothing?

Em has already put dibs on this one…

I had some bits of fabric left and made a few other dresses too…

Now I’m off to make some supercapes. Anybody have some goodies to share this week?

Fingers Crossed ~ Best Shot Monday

Today is it! We all have our fingers crossed over here as we await news of Aunt Meesh’s new baby!

Fingers Crossed

Here is to a happy, healthy and speedy delivery. We are standing by the phone. I have blue and pink fabric just waiting for the word…

Edited Monday morning: BLUE! We are venturing into some new territory over here…we have a BOY cousin on this side of the family. Maverick James was born at 5:52am this morning. When I went into to tell Em this morning she said, “YES!” and did a little fist-pump. “We needed a boy cousin over there!” Girls still rule 4-2 in their house, but I think Uncle DJ won’t feel so very outnumbered now. Congratulations Meesh, DJ and Girls! We can’t wait to meet him!

This & That Thursday

Seriously. It isn’t Friday yet? Really? I swear this is the longest week. Ever.

DSC_0269.jpg

Every year about this time, I get all amped up and make it my mission to figure out how I can simplify our lives. Live more simply. Really appreciate what we have and what the holiday season could really bring to us, instead of the stress it usually does. Rarely do I find any sort of success, but I’m having a go at it again this year. I’m really going to try.

First up…on Monday, I turned off Facebook. Oh. Yes. I. Did!

I realized I spend far too much time reading status updates. There are some “friends” that I will genuinely miss seeing what they are up to, and I will check in on them occasionally – but maybe once a week or so instead of several times a day.

And not only that, I just wiped my GoogleReader clean, too. It is clean – zero unread blog posts. I realized that there is no possible way I was going to ever get to read all of the posts, I was so far behind. So I’m starting fresh. It is very liberating. Don’t worry, the downsizing of computer time will not affect my blog. Much. Well, I’ll still strive for a few posts a week, let’s leave it at that.

DSC_0366.jpg

Every single day someone shows me, or I find, a new craft project or something that we can make in our Workshop, and I want to just make them all! I have all kinds of handmade gift ideas rolling around in my head for nearly everyone on my list…I’m just hoping that I get some of them done.

Thanks for all of your kind words about our Two Birdies excitement. We are furiously creating for the Holiday Boutique on December 4th, and I figure anything *extra* that we don’t sell we’ll post in our etsy store. I may put some photos up there next week and see if we have any interest, especially in the supercapes and such. I’ll post when we get something up there.

I’m getting a little something from my wishlist next weekend, too, a sort of early Christmas present to me. We are finally getting a family photo (or two!) taken. My lovely blog friend, Rose, has kindly squeezed us into her hectic schedule and she is going to shoot us on the beach! A real photo of the four of us has been on my list for about three years now, so needless to say, I am beyond thrilled. I can’t wait to see what she comes up with and to also meet her in-real-life.

I was trying to take some photos for a friend last week for her Christmas card which is what led to the impromptu concert photos in her kitchen from yesterday. For those of you who asked, they were belting out the Taylor Swift song, Love Story. The girls have loved that song for quite awhile now, and we taped SNL when she performed it a few weeks ago. Emma saw it, and…well, she now has Taylor’s “moves” down (Oh yes, Christina! The hips and everything!) and thinks she is a rock star. Yes, she is six. *Sigh.* Julie did get some video of it, I’ll have to try to get it from her. It is pretty priceless.

DSC_0378.jpg

Meanwhile, when Addie isn’t spending all of her time cracking us up, she is on the hunt for “churkeys.” There is one of those blow-up turkey lawn decorations down the street from us and while we were driving past it the other day, Ad screamed, “Ahhhh!! Mama! Did you see the churkey?” I swear that is how she says turkey…churkey. I have to get that on video, too. It’s so cute. So yeah, I do drive a little out of the way just so I can hear her little voice pipe up, “There the churkey is, Mama!”

Speaking of “churkeys” we got a new stove. Just in time for Thanksgiving dinner, pumpkin pie and the start of Christmas baking! 4 working burners, two oven racks and an oven that really heats up to what the dial asks it to? It really is the simple things that makes this girl happy, I tell you.

Now, why do I think of a million things all week long that I can “just put into the T&T Thursday post,” but then I can never remember any of them when I actually sit down to write this? Ah well. There is always next week.

Happy Only-One-Day-Away-From-Friday Day!

The Ants Go Marching.

Just another little morsel from Addikins. Emma and I were almost crying we were laughing so hard at her last night.

The setup: Daddy is away this week at a Leadership Training thing where they are doing a mock business deal. We hopped on Skype last night so the girls could say goodnight and download with him for a few minutes.

M: So how is the training going?
J: Good. Except my “job” that I was given is finance.
M: Erm. That isn’t very fun.
A: Daddy you first have to get an ant farm, like Max’s. (We had just watched Max & Ruby where he has an ant farm.)
J: Yeah? Ok.
A: Yeah, if you have a farm then you can find ants.

Finance. Find ants.

Believe it or not, Emma got Addie’s word play before anyone else. But once we all got it…we couldn’t stop laughing about it. I’ve been smiling about it all day.

Crafty Tuesday

Good crafty morning to you all. I have some goodies to share, but I need to be quick because I have a whole pile of sewing that is beckoning me from the craftroom.

I made these tees for my three nieces who are about to all be big sisters (again!) as they wait for their new little brother or sister. The ETA on Baby is Monday the 23rd, less than a week! Eeeee!! We are all so excited to meet the newest little one!

crafty.jpg

And then I made a few little onesies for the babe, too. My favorite is the lower left one (with the bird, of course). I expect many photos of these until I can get there and get my hands on that baby. Mmmm…I can already smell the “baby smell.”

crafty3.jpg

And I have been trying out some different tags and packaging for our stuff when we sell it.

crafty2.jpg

And we have finalized the logo. We simplified it a little bit – we’ll use the border/bracket for “big” logos, but when we need a smaller, simpler logo – we’ll take it off. The blue is still not quite right on the web version here, but we are definitely going with the cleaner, more modern font. I like it and think it will work nicely.

final_logos.jpg

Now I just need to go sew some stuff to stick labels and pricetags on! I have finished six or seven of the pillowcase dresses, but I don’t have a one of them photographed. I’ll do a whole dress edition next week, so stay tuned.

Happy Crafting!

Um….

Didn’t think I’d be having this conversation with my 4-year old so soon.

A: Mama can girls be boys?
M: What’s that?
A: Can a girl become a boy if she wants to?
M: Ah…well…um…huh. I don’t know what you mean.
(I’m not usually known for being super quick on my feet, but in my defense…hadn’t had my coffee and was caught a little off guard!)
A: Oh. Well, Bear just told me that she doesn’t want to be a girl anymore. She wants to be a boy Bear, and be Cookie’s brother.
M: Oh. OH! Yeah. Ok, well I’ll try to remember that Bear is a boy from now on.

It’s a Bear’s prerogative to change her, er…his mind, I suppose.

DSC_0404.jpg

(This photo has nothing to do with Bear, but J. is traveling all week and he is going to need his girly fix. So be prepared for lots o’ photos. We miss you, Daddy. Come home soon!)
