Relaxation ~ Theme Thursday

Thought I’d hop back in on the Theme Thursday train. I haven’t joined in since it moved on over to Amy Jo’s house, but she suggested Relaxation for today’s theme, and I happened to have some photos from last weekend that might just work.

One of my absolute favorite things to do is eat alfresco…I love to eat outside. Thankfully we can eat outside nearly year-round, but most of the time, we save it for the summer months.

Most days during the summer the girls and I will take a picnic to the park for lunch, or take a cooler of snacks to the beach, or just host playdates, appetizers and drinks (for the Mommys, of course!) on the patio in the late afternoon. I don’t really care what it is we are eating, it is just so relaxing and fun to be eating out in nature.

A lot of times during the summer we will grill out on Sundays evenings and eat out on the patio. This past week we resumed that summer ritual.

Emma recently discovered that she LOVES salmon. Plus we grilled asparagus, another of her favorites. Perfect dinner for her.

And yummy in-season berries with cream for dessert?

That is one delicious and fun way to relax

Ease on over for some more R&R photos.

DIY ~ Theme Thursday

When I found out that this week’s Theme Thursday was DIY: Do It Yourself, I was a little stumped. We haven’t exactly been doing any house projects lately, and I’ve pretty much blown all of my crafty projects on Crafty Tuesday.

So I thought I would try to capture Addie as she “do it myself, Mama!” since that is pretty much all I hear these days. And that didn’t exactly pan out either. She and I have been a little bit on the “outs” this week. (Just picture LOTS of time in the corner, mostly for Addie…but occasionally for me, too! There have been numerous temper tantrums this week.)

And then last night, Em asked if I would help her figure out what she needed to do for her jog-a-thon for school next week. I told her of course I would help her, but as far as the phone calls and asking for sponsors? I told her “You will have to do it yourself.” Ohhhh…Ding, ding, ding!

So here is Em, drummin’ up business for her jog-a-thon next week and proving you can do it yourself if Mama helps you write out a little script. She is expecting to finish 10 laps (which would be 1.25 miles!) and right now if she does, she would raise over $200! Go Em! I think she can do it…she is after all her Mama’s girl!

Drummin' up business

And there is absolutely nothing cuter than listening to her read the script, and the look on her face when everyone said “yes.”

I unfortunately did not set up the photo session very well. I was trying to do dinner, baths, and help her with her pledge drive, so I just snapped a quick, few photos – but didn’t get any great photos. However, I like this one and I tried to salvage it a bit. I’m sure there are plenty more great photos over at Stacy’s today.

I wish… ~ Theme Thursday

I wish everyone had a sister like mine.

And, I wish that I could send everyone an amazing bunch of roses like those I found on my doorstep yesterday.

A rosey surprise

I think the world would be a much happier place if we could all just have a “Meesh” around.

Thanks for the very rosey surprise, Meesh (and DJ and girls, too!). I wish I could give you all hugs…oh, wait! I can! In two weeks! We can hardly wait.

Restful ~ Theme Thursday

I give the girls a bath every night before bed. I realize it probably isn’t ecologically sound (although I do bathe them together, so it is only one bath, not two!) and they definitely don’t need it every night (I don’t wash their hair every night!). But I mostly give them some tubby time because it calms them down. It is part of our “on the way down” routine, and also – the most restful time of the day.

With the time change this past week, we have been having some getting to sleep and getting up problems around our house. But, on the plus side, it is light still at bathtime again. So the wonderful natural light lends to some good photography practice times. (Which is restful for Mommy!)

The pigtails? That is how we tried to get her hair out of her way for dance class today. What you can’t see is all the hair falling out of the pigtails on the back of her head!

Taking baths usually makes me feel like this too, Addie! For me there is nothing more relaxing or peaceful than a nice, long soak. Pure heaven. And the proof of a good soak? Some good ‘ol pruney toes.

Kickin' back

Be sure to stop over to Stacy’s to soak up some other restful photos today.

Special Friend Day ~ Theme Thursday

They announced at Addie’s school last week that they were having a Special Friend Day today. Everyone got to bring a special person to spend the day with them at school.

So I asked her who she wanted to bring.

At first she said:
A: “Mommy!
M: “Ok! I would love to come.” (And I would! How fun to get to see what goes on there and to get play at her sweet school all morning!)

And then she said:
A: Mommy and Daddy!
M: “Well,  I think it says you can only bring one. But we can ask Daddy and maybe if he doesn’t have any meetings he can go.”

So we did. And he didn’t. And it was decided that he would be her special friend today. She has been looking forward to it all week and was telling Em’s friends and the Moms yesterday that “my Daddy is coming to school with me today!”

I’m so excited that they get to spend some special time together just the two of them. And I made him promise to take pictures of everything and I just sent them on their way…

special friend day

So I’m off to go enjoy some special yoga class time by myself.

Make sure to stop over to Stacy’s today to see more special moments!

Projects ~ Theme Thursday (kinda)

This is kinda what we all feel like around here…

dazed and a little confused

…dazed and maybe a little confused. We are all fighting head colds, stuffy, stuffy noses and chesty coughs.

When I found out this week’s theme was Projects, I decided that I really only had 2, okay really only had 3 “projects” that I wanted to get done this week.

1. Switch out some photographs in the frames around the house (mostly on the mantle – but really all over),
2. Get all of my news/RSS feeds moved over to NewsGator (so I can read them on my iPhone), and
3. Organize my scrap stuff in time for my Crafty Friday Nite Party (as in the Friday that is tomorrow).

So…how did I do?

Well, here is the before photo of the frames on the mantle.

project1

And here is the after shot.

project1

Stunning, isn’t it? Part of the problem is that I love all of these photos, but I have new ones I want to put up and I’m seriously running out of space for frames. I remember my Dad asked me when we lived in Chicago – “How did you guys ever decorate before you had kids?” It’s true…we have a lot of photos of the girls. I just need to part with some of the photos…but how do you do that? Another day, perhaps.

Let’s see. Second on the list?
project2

Well, I did start that project at least. See? Laptop open.  Coffee nearly gone. Newsgator account created. And a few feeds even entered before my head just had to lie down on the pillow. So heavy. (See first paragraph up there…see it? Stuffy head?)

Then I did catch a second wind and decided as long as Emma was running around (she clearly could have gone to school today) we were going to tackle the playroom/craftroom. I was going to attempt to at least get to that third bullet point on the list.

project3

So many stinkin’ little tiny Polly Pocket shoes, and Barbie shoes, and dress-up shoes! Honestly, do they reproduce in the middle of the night?

Hours later after we had rounded up a trash bag of toys to giveaway and another bag of junky stuff to trash, I decided it was a good idea to steam clean the area rug in the room. It does look amazing on the playroom half of the room.

Needless to say the scrapbook stacks of stuff are still sitting there on the desk (the craft side) beckoning me. But I just don’t have the energy tonight. I am pretty happy that everything is back in its’ place on the toy side, the craft side will have to wait for another day.

One other happy little outcome from this project. Emma really got into the cleaning and organizing. She was so proud and called me to come see how she had organized the play kitchen.

project4

If I had any voice left I would have surely gone on for a good ten minutes about how amazing it looks and how I couldn’t be prouder. But I fear I may have passed a little of my obsessive-compulsiveness on to her today.

Winter Wonderland ~ Theme Thursday

Well, I guarantee our take on Winter Wonderland will be quite different than most of the other Theme Thursdays for today.

Instead of playing “king of the hill” on top of snowbanks – we frolic in great, heaping piles of leaves and at best hope for maybe a rainy day or two.

Playing in the leaf mountain

And this is our version of the “snow angel” -

Making leaf angels

We can visit the snow (about an hour away) whenever we choose, but…really, why would we want to?

Considering it is almost impossible to get them to wear long sleeves, I think these California girls would agree that snow is waaaay over-rated!

Favorite Holiday Memory ~ Theme Thursday

I thought I would have a hard time picking a favorite holiday memory for today’s Theme Thursday.

Christmas has always been my favorite time of year, but to pick just one favorite memory? That might be a bit of an impossible task for me.

I thought that maybe I would write about Christmas Eve. I love the anticipation – the going to midnight mass, coming out after church to softly falling snow, putting out treats for Santa, snuggling into bed with both my brother and sister and waiting for Christmas morning to come.

And then I thought maybe I would write about the very special Christmas Eve, when J. asked me to marry him – and the Christmas Eve nine years later when he asked me again – definitely ranks as two of the best Christmas gifts on the all-time list.

But today I opened up my email and my Dad had found, and sent me, a copy of the letter. I had tried to write about this Christmas last year, but didn’t do a very good job of re-creating it. When I realized that the letter was attached, I knew there wouldn’t be a photo for today’s Theme Thursday. This memory takes a written form, and I don’t have a photo that captures it nearly as well as this.

The letter that was under the tree on Christmas morning, 1992.

To All Non-Believers

It has come to my attention that a number of you no longer believe
in me and the happiness that my efforts can produce.  You have been
identified as one who no longer wishes to enjoy the receiving part
of my efforts, and in so doing are denying me the pleasure of
giving which is the reason I exist.

I am therefore discontinuing my sharing with those who refuse to
experience this truest example of Christmas’ meaning.  But I will
take this opportunity to remind you of the Spirit of the Season
that you are forsaking.

St. Nicholas and later Santa Claus visited homes at night,
especially poor families, or those with children, to leave gifts.
The purpose of the clandestine visits were to provide gifts to
someone without them knowing who left them.  That way the recipient
could not feel obligated to return the favor.  It is much the same
way that God provided us with the gift of Eternal Life.  He sent
His Son to die for us, even before we knew who He was.  Then the
gift was completely free without obligation, it is ours for the
taking!

Your belief in those Santa presents under the tree are intended to
symbolize the same thing.  If you simply accept them, and don’t
question where they came from, or who pays for them, then the
pleasure is shared by the giver as well as the recipient.  The gift
can then be enjoyed without having to “match it” or return the
favor.

If you can agree with this reason for having Santa stay in our
celebration, you can take part in this sharing opportunity by
looking outside the door for gifts. (Just like St. Nicholas).  If
you still can’t see the advantage to believing in the need for
Santa, your gifts will be shared with someone else.

Enjoy the rest of your day, and the time you have with each other.
—Santa

This piece of paper forever changed the way I look at Christmas.  It was a very memorable Christmas indeed. I think of it often, and what a fantastic gift the letter was – back then and again now.

I think it is just a good little reminder while we are all running around, crazed and trying to get things done.

Enjoy the season.

Thankful ~ Theme Thursday

This week’s Theme is Thankful. Where to begin?

I am thankful first and foremost for J. – my sweet husband and amazing partner in this crazy life. I’m thankful for my loving and supportive family. I’m thankful for my great circle of friends who make my life so fun.

But most of all, I am thankful that God blessed Jam and I with an angel…

…and not just one, but two!

How could I ever want for more? I am just so very thankful.
