And…we’re off! Almost.

I had a couple of ideas for good posts, but have not had one minute to put any of them together for you. Today has been a mad dash for the finish line – and I can see it, it is in sight. Maybe an hour or two away, but soooo close!

Of course I have this neurotic need to have a clean house before I leave. I got this tendency from my mom, we never left a dirty house when we were going on a trip. Plus the neighbors are watching the kitties while we are gone. They stopped over to drop off a house-warming gift one day and it just happened to be a chaotic, disaster-of-a-house kind of day. So I’d like to make a better second impression. Therefore, I have some picking up to do before I crawl into bed. Plus, how great is it to come home to a nice clean house??

I did find out that there isn’t internet connectivity in the room, only an internet cafe. So I’m not so sure that I will get a chance to post anything next week. But the idea of no laptop, no phone, no internet – just truly unplugged is a pretty intriguing idea right now. I think I may do it…a true vacation.

So don’t fear if you don’t hear from us. We are just frolicking in the blue-green Caribbean waters and soaking in some serious family time. I’ll meet you all back here next Sunday!

———————————-

On Wednesday, June 4th be sure to pop on over and wish Lauren a Happy 4th Birthday! You gift will get to you, even if we don’t get to talk with you, La-La! Have a great one!

——————————–

Also you get an extra week to do your Small Change Month 4 challenge if you still want to…we’ll discuss next week.

——————————–

And maybe Puppy will be named by then. You’ll have to tune in to see if you won. Leave a comment if you have a good name!

New Addition to the Family

Ha! It is NOT what you think, and it isn’t to our little family, but rather our extended family. My parents just got a new puppy yesterday…here is the first released picture of the little guy.

puppy.jpg

He is a little fluffy, sweet golden retriever. I think he is one of the cutest things ever. I told the girls that Nana and Papa have a new puppy and they are so excited. Of course, Emma told me the other day that when our kitties die and go to heaven with Tuck, we can get a puppy instead. Apparently the novelty of having cats is over with her.

And Addie adores puppies. She points them out wherever we go and makes sure everyone sees the puppy and I think would really love a puppy. Someday. I just know, no matter how old the girls are, I will be the one taking care of the puppy. And we are just busy – I would feel bad that the puppy wouldn’t be getting enough attention. Cripes, our cats barely get the minimum quota of affection any more, I don’t think adding a puppy to the mix is going to help that any.

Anyhow, we are going to all live vicariously through Nana and Papa and enjoy their new puppy. As of press time, the little guy is still nameless. Anybody have any interesting puppy names they would like to contribute for consideration? He is a boy puppy. Golden retriever, like I said. Just leave your names in the comments as I am sure Papa at least will read them. Maybe we’ll do a little contest – if they use your name, you’ll win a prize. Not sure what yet – but something good!

Wicked-ly Good Time

My sister just left this morning. That was the reason for my non-existent blogging this week…we have been having too much fun!

It is also the reason for my boo-hoo blues all day. Man, I really, really miss her already. It is amazing how you can know someone so completely, and still never have enough time to talk and tell each other all the things you need to.  We had a great dinner and went to the theater, just Meesh and I, last night. And I got to share her excitement as she watched Wicked for the first time, which was almost as enjoyable as seeing it for the second time. That is one terrific adventure!

So our revolving door of visitors is temporarily suspended, I am working on two projects due by Friday (yikes!), and trying to pack and do all the trivial little things that need to be done so we can leave for our vacation on Saturday.

Aye….in other words, my blogging drought will probably continue for a few more days. But I promise later tonight/tomorrow I’ll post the adorable video and pics of Em in her dance recital yesterday. She was a prima ballerina as always – and pretty darn good with the tap shoes, too! We were very impressed once again that she really seems to have the poise and determination of a dancer. (She was, of course, the most beautiful dancer as well. This coming from a purely unbiased mommy.)

The Future Is So Bright…

…we had to wear shades in sunny California yesterday. Unfortunately, the future was not looking so bright for our beloved Cubbies.

It was Addie’s first Cubs game (on the outside at least, she attended a few safely tucked away in my tummy before she made her grand appearance). Maybe if it had been at Wrigley the Cubbies would have won for Addison. (For crying out loud, she is named after one of the streets your stadium sits on – you can’t give her a win for her first game?)

At any rate…we got a lot of fun pictures, ate a lot of hotdogs and peanuts, and had a good time. My Best Shot Monday is here…along with a couple of other ones just for fun! Make sure to check out other fun photos at Picture This today.

A.’s surprise after the Cubs, got their third out, leaving the bases loaded.

And finally, it was not only A.’s first Cubs game, it was also our first foray into pigtails. Behold the teeny, tiny little curly pigtails. They lasted til about the 6th inning…not too bad, I’d say.

Hit the Road, Jack. (And Sam, and any other boys with grand ideas!)

Dear Emma Gracie,

That big *sigh* you heard today was from your Mommy. You have leap-frogged over the age of 4 and you have gone straight to age 14.

You told me today that when you grow up you and Sam are going to get married. Little Sam is your sweet, (very cute – you do have good taste!) little friend that you play with at Kids Klub while Mommy works out. You just told me as we were walking out, “Mommy, when I get bigger like you, Sam and I are going to get married. And he’ll get bigger too so we can get married!”

What happened to marrying Daddy? (Not in a sick, Kentucky-inbred sort of way – but a sweet little FOUR-YEAR OLD way.) You are not supposed to be planning out futures with little boys named Sam (or boys by any other name, for that matter.), you are supposed to be running around having a fun life free of worries or cares.

All I’m saying is, keep this up and you are going to give your Mommy a heart-attack. Come on! You know the plan:

  • No dating until you are 18.
  • You’ll get married at 26 or so.
  • Have little grandbabies around 28, or maybe 30.

So, Sam, hit the road. You can come around knocking in 14 years or so.

All my love,
Mommy

Why I Blog…

My friend Christina over at Momology tagged me for another meme.  This one is a kinda easy one, although I am not going to to *tag* anyone…if you think it is good blog fodder and want to play along, just leave a comment so people will be sure to pop on over to read yours too!

Why I Blog…

My “blog” really just grew out of the online journal I kept about both of my pregnancies and the early months of the girls’ lives. I started the journal mostly to keep family and friends up-to-date and to have a little repository that I could go back and read. J. made a pretty sweet journal tool for me to use, and we had the “Emma Site” that later became the “Emma & Addie Site.” It got to a point that it just seemed easier to use a blogging software. It is easier to maintain, it has much better archiving and searching abilities, and you all can leave comments! That is the part I really enjoy about the blog over the journal – it is so much more interactive.

So the blog is for our families and friends spread out all over the U.S., so they can keep on top of what is happening in our world. And it serves as a very detailed baby book for each of the girls – this blog has so much more detail than I could ever hope to capture in the pretty, little, bound, paper baby books that I got as shower gifts. I still try to keep the books up-to-date, but I use the blog to do it. When did she first start walking? When did that tooth pop through? It is all here.

I also use the blog as a little “mommy” sanity check. I like to write about what is making me crazy or worrying me. It has always helped me to “write it down” and it is a little bit of therapy for me. Cheap, cheap therapy.

And I have to agree with Christina on one of her reasons. I’ve met (even if only online) some great friends. I feel like I know these lovely women and their children, and I look forward to hearing about their trials, tribulations and successes each week.

So that is why I do it.

Now, why do you come back to read this? Why do you write your own blog? Any other reasons I’m sorely overlooking?

Let’s Make a Deal

If the art thing doesn’t work out for Emma, she will make a fantastic lawyer.

J. and I have been astounded lately with her knack for debate. She uses her negotiation skills for everything. Five more minutes of coloring before bed? Five, four, three more bites of her dinner. And she is famous for ONE more story before bed. I noticed the other night when I went in to tuck her in (Denise had put them to bed), that there was a stack of books, we are talking maybe 10 or 12 books next to her bed. I guess she found a tactic that works on Denise. She definitely has one that works on her Daddy. (Not so much on Mommy.) 🙂

For a time she would pose it as “Hey, Mom – I have a great idea! Let’s….” and so would begin her request. I loved it when she said this, she always said it with such enthusiasm, it almost didn’t matter what she was asking for. (Almost.)

But lately she has resorted to pleading…okay, let’s call it what it really is…whining. And what is the one thing Mommy cannot stand?

Whining.

I think, however, that we have found a great tactic that is helping tremendously with the whining. (Listen up – all you Mamas with whiny 4-year olds!) I think J. actually started this with her.

E.: “But….(whiny, whiny, whiny little request).
M. (or D.): “Would you like to try again?”
E.: “OK! Mommy, may I have (insert request here) please?”

I am not kidding you…it works every time! And not only that, she is starting to censor herself! She will start and before I can even say anything to her she says, “Mom. Let me try again.” It is like a little game, and it is so beautiful. And it also makes me smile every time she does it.

Obviously we are not a whine-free household. Yet. But, I’m holding onto the fantasy. Someday.

She’s still here!

Maybe Jif needs a spokesmodel? They would be hard-pressed to find a cuter one than this…

ad_pj.jpg

I realized that we had a lot of posts about Em and her doings this past week, but not much about Ad. She is still being her cute little self. And I do think she is very happy to have her sister’s full attention back.

ad_beach.jpg

We did take a trip to the doctor’s office today. I suspected that she may have an ear infection with her little hysterics in the the middle of the night. Apparently she may have had the hand-foot-mouth disease (hoof and mouth disease?). The little blister on her tongue last week was evidently not caused from her trauma of falling and hitting her mouth on the table, but rather from this crazy virus. The doctor said she may have had some blisters in her throat – which would have caused the loss of appetite and screaming. My God, the screaming!

The poor thing. At any rate, I think she is recovering and feeling better. And we are working on getting back to “normal” for a few days…until the next round of chaos begins!

A Picasso? Maybe a Hemingway?

My little Em is going to be a great artist someday. I am convinced she will be an amazing painter or writer. And I try to encourage it whenever I can…however I must draw the line at composing the next great American novel or impressionist painting on my SHEETS. On my BED!

I tried to make her take a little nap last week while Lauren was here – so I put her in my bed for her rest. She asked if she could draw in her little notebook, and I, of course, told her that would be a great, restful thing to do.

Ha.

I am about to get into bed and our bed is littered with post-it notes. I mean, the entire pad was scattered around, on top of the sheets. I made a joke to J. about how instead of a bed covered in rose petals, I get a yellow, sticky paper covered one.

But as I started to pick up the paper, I uncovered the sheets. And this is what I saw…

writing.jpg

Sorry for the poor quality of pics – it was very dark and I couldn’t get the sheets spread out really great – but if you look, you will see on my white sheets, written in blue ballpoint pen, “Emma, Momma, Daddy” and a few other unintelligible words.

I’ll admit it was kind of funny after the initial shock wore off and my anger passed. When I asked her why she did it, she said “I put the paper over it to cover it up!”

Of course.

Never did get an answer on why she wrote on the sheets. She has had privileges taken away. And she was just about to get her dog game back – when I went upstairs this morning and she had drawn all over her toybox! At least this time it was in pencil.

So the doggy game is going to be mine until Friday. We’ll see if she can control her artistic impulses until then.

A Mother’s Love – Best Shot Monday

Tracey’s theme for today’s Best Shot Monday is a Mother’s Love. This was a hard one. I decided on this photo that I had actually taken last December. It fills me with love every time I look at it.

girls.jpg

I remember thinking, like most mothers, when I was pregnant with A., “how in the world will I ever love another child as much as I love E?” Yet the moment I had A. my fears vanished. But now, seeing the girls together, that is what truly makes my heart swell. They are each beautiful girls on their own, but together they are amazing.

Go soak up some more Mother’s love at Picture This.
