Well, now…this is embarrassing.

It has been nearly two weeks since we have checked in here on the ‘ol blog. No excuses, just been busy – and I mean, CRAZY busy. The girls start school tomorrow, as unbelievable as that is, so I guess in all reality…summer is ovah!

So how did we spend the last few weeks of summer? Let’s back up a bit, shall we?

Mama left her little birdies and Daddy for five.whole.days! Me and my best girls headed up to Santa Barbara for a yoga retreat. We stayed at the St. Mary’s retreat house that has been turned into a monastery.

DSC_0041

A gorgeous, serene place with an incredible mountain view.

DSC_0038

DSC_0056

We did yoga inside, outside, on the beach.

DSC_0003

An incredible week full of yoga, hikes, meditation, and peace – and we all came home Zen Mamas.

DSC_0006

We celebrated an anniversary quick like, and then the Voris family went on a little roadtrip to Monterey. Despite forgetting J’s suitcase we managed to have a wonderful weekend together.

DSC_0238

No, we didn’t leave J. behind, he was just taking the photo, so Mommy would show up in a photo or two for a change. See here he is…when we hit the Aquarium.

DSC_0212

And Gracie tried her hand at scuba diving. I wasn’t entirely sure she was going to do it. It sounded like a great idea at 10am when she was watching the other group, but as the day wore on she got more and more nervous.

But she didn’t back down.
DSC_0063

She got all suited up. They got to wear dry suits – I was so jealous!

DSC_0067

She did great. It was funny to watch them because their guide would pull stuff up and talk to them about it, and our sweet little brown-noser would pull her regulator out every time to be the first to answer questions.

DSC_0115

DSC_0159

Her first words when she came out of the ocean, “It was AHHHHHWWWESOME!” I think she is hooked.

DSC_0194

Addie in the meantime made it her mission to hunt down some otters. She claims them “just as cute as kitties!” Thankfully we got to see a lot of them.

DSC_0203

One of the nights we went out for seafood and had this lovely view.

DSC_0259

And the otters visited us.

DSC_0295

It was a perfect little way to say goodbye to summer.

DSC_0335

Give us 60 minutes and a beach…

…and I’ll show you one happy Mommy and baby girl.

DSC_0063

Em and Daddy made one last pass at the Comic-Con floor on Sunday morning, so Ad and I ditched over to Coronado Island for a little beach time.

We uncovered perfect seashells…

DSC_0070

Hunted for some tide pool discoveries…

DSC_0081

And dipped our toes in the cold, clear ocean…

DSC_0083

There is something so incredibly rejuvenating about the beach. It just makes me happy. Especially when I get to share it with my Nature girl, Rosey Toes.

DSC_0071

Okay, I just searched for pics from the last time we were on this very beach…check out the tiny little Tiny in the photo in this post and Em is Addie-sized. Oh, it happens so fast!

Now you see us, now you don’t.

Well…I’ve finally unpacked and finished the laundry and…now I’m repacking. Yes, we are jaunting down to San Diego for a few days of comic nerd-i-ness with Daddy and Uncle Jeff. Well, the girls are heading to ComiCon with the boys and Mommy is heading to the spa, beach, pool….all three maybe?

But before we pop off on another quick little vacation, I wanted to wrap-up the last vacation which was, as Emma said, “the best cousin vacation EVER!”

I have to admit it was so great to get some sister time.

DSC_0031

And the girls got their camping ya-yas all out while they stayed with Meesh for the week.

There was a lot of beach fun…
DSC_0084

And these two were as thick as thieves the whole week….

DSC_0068

Although these two gave them a run for their money once they got into their groove…

DSC_0018

I left the happy campers for a few days and met up in Ludington with my best college friend and we celebrated our birthdays and 22 years of friendship.

Ludington…is gorgeous.
DSC_0092

We stayed in a lovely little cottage, hiked to a beautiful lighthouse, kayaked around the lake, ate good food, and just talked, and talked, and talked, and then talked a little more. It was the perfect catch-up and getaway.

collage

(Lots more Ludington photos over on Flickr!)

Then….it was back to camping! S’mores, campfires and more beach time. How cute are all of our hosts?

DSC_0257

And we celebrated a certain someone turning NINE.

DSC_0180

Addie was tall enough to drive the go-carts by herself. I think she was terrified, but she powered through bravely and made it around the course a few times.

DSC_0226

My favorite photo of the Newman family before we left them…

DSC_0355

Then the girls and I trekked downstate and melted. Literally. Whew…it was H-O-T.

We went to to the 4th of July parade. Papa gave the girls an empty bag and told them it was for the parade. Em looked very confused and asked, “to sit on?” “No, for all of the candy” he explained. OH. MY. CANDY. Manna from heaven. My poor candy-deprived children.

DSC_0880

The parade was a hit despite being 100 degrees, and it was nice to see Papa and his guys sing too.

DSC_0886

Our second week was a little more laid back. Lots of swimming, visiting with friends and family and catching fireflies. Yes, there is still a definite fascination with fireflies.

DSC_0893

And fireworks.

DSC_0920

Thank you everyone in Michigan (and our Wisconsin family too!) for making our vacation spectacular.

DSC_0947

And Vacation – Part II…

…Or Part deux, as they might say in our first port of call, Sint Martin/St. Maarten, the half-French, half-Dutch island.

DSC_0125

Daddy actually took the girls out bright and early on St. Maarten, in search of french crepes. Mommy, well…Mommy it seems had a little too much to drink at the amazing French restaurant, Remy, the evening before. So she was, ahem…getting her head back on straight before joining the party on Orient Beach.

DSC_0144

J. and I visited the island 12 years ago, way before we had kids, and way before the island was ravaged by tourists. So while the beach, ocean, and sea air were all beautiful and a great way to spend an afternoon, the rest of the island seemed…a little run-down. It is an exercise in eye-opening guilt when you travel to some of these poorer islands – and while I’d love to buy goods to help support the people living there, most of the stuff they have for sale is just the same ‘ol crap they hawk to the tourists. Stuff I don’t need or want. So the beach trip was really the only highlight of St. Maarten.

Then we sailed on to St. Thomas. J. and I got in two fantastic dives (we saw a shark and a pretty cool wreck!) the morning we landed in St. Thomas. It started to rain as we were coming back in on the dive boat.

DSC_0223

Thankfully rain in the islands is warm and relatively sporadic – it stops as quickly as it starts. So we rounded up the girls and attempted to go out and explore the island. St. Thomas is kinda expensive. And is filled with a lot of the same tourist junk, too. Although we did find, and buy, what are being sold as “the softest sheets in the world.” I was so excited to find sheets made from bamboo for our new bed! And then I discovered that the company who makes them is in Utah, so it wasn’t even an exotic St. Thomas brand. I bought some anyhow, and after having them on our bed for a few nights, I must say – I think that they did not oversell them…they are some soft sheets!

All in all, St. Thomas made the list as a possible destination we can revisit someday, but we were happy to get back on the ship, our home-away-from-home. After all we had Pirate parties to attend:

DSC_0164

And character breakfasts to wake up to:

DSC_0257

Princesses to meet:

DSC_0274

(Addie spotted Ariel – her fave princess – while we were down in the atrium. Ariel was a few floors up and Addie just screeched “Ariel!” and took off to chase her down. It was definitely a highlight hanging with Ariel for a few minutes with noone else around!)

Animations to create:

DSC_0288

And seeing our animations come to life:

DSC_0309

DSC_0314

We celebrated an early birthday:

DSC_0447

And finally, it was time for our last stop – Castaway Cay.

DSC_0341

I would just like to go on the record as saying, “I want to live on Castaway Cay.”

Seriously. The day on the island was spectacular. We fed and swam with stingrays:

DSC_0367

Er…some of us did:

DSC_0353

Some decided that they just wanted to snorkel in the part where “there are none of those stingrays!”:

DSC_0362

We played in the water and sand all day long:

DSC_0372

We did more waterslides:

DSC_0421

And when we got tired of playing in the water, we just rested. In the water:

DSC_0379

It was the perfect end to the perfect vacation. I just put one thing in the suggestion box…”Maybe you could just do a cruise that stays the entire week at Castaway Cay?”

DSC_0444

Vacation Recap – Part I.

Like promised, I’m back with our vacation highlights. It has taken me all-the-live-long-week to even get to the point that I can deal with the to-do lists and backlog of email that I left behind when we shoved off two weeks ago. Wow, it really was 2 weeks ago tonight that we left! I guess being on “island time” for the past two weeks has made the time cruise on (oh you know that pun was intended…as lame as it is!) by pretty quickly.

So, we left on the red-eye to Orlando and I was quickly reminded of the last time we took that flight and I vowed to “never take the red-eye AGAIN.”  J. usually sleeps fairly well, the girls sleep pretty well, and Mommy rarely sleeps at all. But the flight leaves at 10:30pm, and it is essentially a 5-hour flight, so even if the girls sleep from wheels up to the minute we touchdown – 5 hours of sleep a night is not good for my normal 12-hour sleepers.

So they either become uncontrollably giddy:

DSC_0001

Or they crash:

DSC_0037

Sometimes they do both. But we made it to the port and met Mickey – in our traveling clothes and glassy-eyed from no sleep:

DSC_0023

And then we saw the ship:

DSC_0008

We realized nothing really mattered, we were on vacation. It is a magnificent ship. I think it was by far the most relaxing vacation J. and I have ever taken. No email, no texts, no work, no worries. And we did everything and nothing all at once.

Thankfully I remembered to grab our swimsuits and throw them in the carry-on while we waited for our stateroom to be ready and luggage to be delivered. We tried out the pools:

DSC_0042

And the Aquaduck:

DSC_0034

Yes, it is a waterslide that goes all the way around the top of the ship’s deck. And yes, it is clear and at one point goes off the ship out over the sea:

DSC_0205

It is, as Emma would say, Awwwwesome!

We found our staterooms pretty awesome, too. I am certain I have stayed in smaller hotel rooms than our cabin:

DSC_0046

And our own little balcony got a lot of use. Most mornings you could find me, a Cove latte, and my kindle out there while the rest of the stateroom slept off their kids’ club hangovers:

DSC_0076

I did get a glimpse into what it might be like with two teenagers in the house, every morning we didn’t have an early excursion I had to drag the girls out of bed at 10am, which around our house is LATE! But they also were going to bed extremely LATE every night as well. And the second night I was treated to this:

DSC_0073

Addie read (and finished) an entire big, chapter book – all by herself. This is a very big deal, believe me. Oh, she CAN read, she just usually wants “you to read to me,” – thank you very much. So to see the two of them snuggled all up reading real books, well, it did this Mama’s heart proud.

The days at sea were full, but very relaxing:

DSC_0080

Between the reading, swimming, and eating (free ice cream – all the time!), there are 10 things to choose from at any given time.

We Bippity Boppity Boutiqued:

DSC_0113

We saw stage shows; there are first-run movies in the movie theater; Addie and I took a cooking class and learned to make apple strudel; and Daddy and Em took a towel origami class and learned to make cool towel creatures like this:

DSC_0237

(Bear and Cat in the Hat didn’t mind being left in the cabin – they found their own fun, I think!)

The girls spent a lot of time in the Oceaneer’s Club & Lab – thousands of square feet of “kids only” fun. And while they were away, Mommy and Daddy got to play on the “adults only” side of the ship.

Spa? Yes.
Adult Pool? Yes.
Peace and quiet? Yes and Yes!

DSC_0155

And with that, I think I’ll have to take a pause. I’ll be back tomorrow, or maybe the next day, with the Ports of Call round-up. I think I need to milk the vacation mode just a smidge longer.

Crafty Tuesday

Well, I spent the day crafting with Birdie #2…and we have some fun stuff but…it didn’t get done in time for today’s CT. So I guess you’ll just have to wait until next week.

Three of the projects we accomplished today are for upcoming birthdays, though. It feels good to be ahead of the game for a change. Especially since we are going to be gone for an entire week in a mere two weeks.

OH?! Didn’t I mention where we are going? Well, see for yourself…

EEEEEEEeeeeee!!!

Yes, we are taking a Disney cruise! Add it to the list of perks at Daddy’s Disney job – we get to go be the guinea pigs for the one of the first sailings. We are headed to St. Maarten, St. Thomas and Castaway Cay. I have been trying not to get too excited about it because it seemed so far off and we have SO MUCH TO DO before we go. But, now? It is only 2 weeks away. NOW, I’m excited.

So the next few weeks I may have a Crafty Tuesday as we prep for birthdays and vacation, but for a few weeks in March you can expect radio silence from around here because I will be in the middle of the Caribbean. Thank you, Uncle Walt.

Vacation Part Deux – Michigan.

We continued our vacation and headed on up to Michigan from Orlando. Yes, I realize it does not make for a very intuitive vacation. But as I was looking at airfare and trying to decide if we were going to get to go see family in Michigan or not, it was actually cheaper (a lot cheaper!) to do a crazy little three-legged jag than to try and do two separate trips. And since we were also running low on “summertime,” it seemed like a brilliant idea to do the combo.

Yes, brilliant. Except for the fact that we started part two of our vacation running low on energy…very tired. But we powered through and even managed to visit Greenfield Village. Daddy was very excited to take the girls to the Village since he hadn’t been since grade school. I thought I had been there, but decided that I most definitely hadn’t been on that side of the museum before. It was incredibly cool – like literally stepping back in time.

DSC_0442DSC_0597DSC_0502DSC_0544

And the gardens. Addie and I totally geeked out on all of the amazing flowers in every single garden.

DSC_0512DSC_0537

Both of the girls were enraptured with the Laura Ingalls show.

DSC_0494DSC_0497

And they got to try their hands at making candles, too.

DSC_0562

When we couldn’t take any more fun, we hauled it back and spent a little time with family, and cats. Yes, there is a new cat in Addie’s life. Nena’s kitten, Mini.

DSC_0179

Poor, poor Mini. Addie was obsessed with her. I’m certain the cat sighed a huge sigh of relief the minute Addie left the state.

DSC_0159

Nana also taught the girls how to knit…well Em picked it up at least. She was going gangbusters on the plane, but I don’t think she has touched it since then.

DSC_0189

And we spent a little time in Nana & Papa’s pool. Well, the girls did and I tried desperately to get a good cousins pic. I got this… (almost! so close!)

DSC_0014

And this one…(it isn’t toooo bad although no one is looking in the same spot!)

DSC_0130

Or how about this one…(Ella!!)

DSC_0108

Gee, I wonder who Ella gets it from?

DSC_0098

I was pretty psyched to get this shot with the littlest Newman. You can hardly tell that I had to grab him and hold tight until we got the photo!

DSC_0090

Despite the fun…

DSC_0064

And loving the family time…

DSC_0118

I think we were all happy to touch down in California, back on the west coast baby.

DSC_0569

Family vacation 2011 under our belt. On to next year!

DSC_0616

Vacation Part 1 – Orlando.

Oh, I had to get that last post down. Not that my heart isn’t still hurting but at some point I do want to document the rest of our vacation, too.

I didn’t (as I know some of you noticed!) blog at all while we were on vacation. I did a sort of facebook photo blog of sorts and I finally got all the rest of my photos up on flickr. And now after a recovery week from our vacation, it is already kind of hard to remember some parts of our few weeks. I did have a flashback tonight – when J. made us pina coladas -back to the pool of the Polynesian. Mmmm…but for the most part, I am just happy to be home and cranking on our next adventure.

So a few favorite pics and memories from part one of our vacation – Orlando.

Our view from our hotel room in the morning…
DSC_0245

And in the evening…

DSC_0430

The Polynesian ended up being a great resort for us. When J. had to do stuff for work (oh, yeah! Daddy actually was there to work for some of our “vacation!”), the girls and I could easily take the ferry to the Magic Kingdom, or the monorail straight to Epcot. Plus the atmosphere put us right back in Hawaii, so it was like two vacations in one.

Surprisingly Epcot seemed to be the favorite park in our family. The girls really loved Test Track, Nemo and visiting all of the countries.

DSC_0345

Although the safari at Animal Kingdom was pretty eye-opening as well.

DSC_0171

And the girls were mesmerized by Magic Kingdom…it is so similar to Disneyland but so much bigger! Here Em was giving Ad a little boost to check out the differences in the Pirates ride.

DSC_0061

And this may be the first photo of Addie with a character, ever. Usually she is terrified of going up to them, but for Pooh she made a definite exception.

DSC_0386

We had a great time and the weather cooperated most of the time, too. And when it got too hot, we just popped back to the pool. Another perk of the Polynesian – the volcano waterslide!

DSC_0016

But we also visited that “other” park in Orlando. Why? When we have all that Disney could offer at our fingertips? Because Disney doesn’t have Harry Potter World.

Oh. My. Magic Wand. It is most awesome. We were reading Harry Potter (the first book) as a family and finished it right before we left on vacation. So we made the pilgrimage to the motherland.

DSC_0275

The Hogwarts ride is by far the best ride/rollercoaster I have ever been on in my life. It is that good. Emma disagreed, however, and didn’t want to go on it a second time with me.

We did share a butterbeer, though, which was equally as awesome in her eyes.

DSC_0283

The whole Diagon Alley is pretty amazing with lots of good stuff to see and do.

DSC_0257

It was a packed and fun vacation as the tired expressions on Thing 2 can tell you…

DSC_0327

While Thing 1 rested up for the second half of the trip…

DSC_0328

Stay tuned for the second half of the trip coming up – Michigan.

Just checking in…

…and restocking our suitcases before we head out again tomorrow.

Yeah, even though it couldn’t really be helped, our summer travel vacation plans kind of all got
smashed together into these few weeks.

This past weekend we got to crash Daddy and Uncle Jeff’s annual trip to Comic Con in San Diego.
The boys even took the girls to the convention for a few hours. The excitement before they headed out…

DSC_0111

…and Mommy and Aunt JB headed to their very happy place for a little spa day. It was all good.

DSC_0112

When all the girls reconvened at the resort, we had a very relaxing and beautiful weekend.

DSC_0075

Addie couldn’t look into the sun for the photo on the camera timer, but found a minute to pose in front of the waterfall…

DSC_0095

…and in some Rupunzel hair.

DSC_0096

It always amazes me that the girls find new friends everywhere they go.

DSC_0099

Maybe it is all of their ferocious energy that attracts them?

DSC_0100

Of course, they had to revisit their favorite part of the rooms at the Grand – the bathtub.
Addie is actually kneeling in there, that is how deep it is!

DSC_0104

And when they weren’t swimming in the bathtub, they perfected their jumps and flips in the big pools.

DSC_0116

It was indeed a fantastic weekend and great way to dive into our family vacation.

DSC_0120

So now we are packing it up and heading to Orlando. This time we are tagging along with Daddy as he does some work, and we are all excited about getting to explore DisneyWorld and go to Harry Potter World! Then we get a few days in Michigan to see all of our peeps up there. I’m just hoping we don’t melt in all of the humidity between the two states.

London Calling.

DSC_0355.jpg

These photos have been calling from my hard drive for the past two weeks. I arrived at the realization that the photos are not going to get edited any time soon, so I’m putting them all up on flickr if you are interested in perusing them. But, be forewarned…there are many.

I just can’t believe it was only two weeks ago that J. and I were gallivanting our way across London sans children. So how was it, you ask?

AH-mazing! It was so very much fun. And a timely little anniversary present to ourselves. (Happy 17 years to us today!)

DSC_0327.jpg

It did take me a few days to look at a menu and not automatically think “what should we get the girls to eat.” And I would wake up and sort of listen for them before realizing – “Ha! They are not even here!”

DSC_0308.jpg

But, once I got out of mom-mode, it was very relaxing and fun. I was on my own while J. worked for a few of the days and I just wandered around, gave my camera some love and visited all the museums I wanted to. I pretty much didn’t say anything to anyone unless I stopped for a coffee or lunch somewhere – and nobody said anything to me. It was kinda nice. For a day or two.

DSC_0129.jpg

Then I had J. all to myself and we did all the things that would have bored the girls to tears.

Like visit Stamford Bridge, home to the Chelsea Football Club…

DSC_0042.jpg

We took the tour, so we got to see all the behind-the-scenes stuff…

DSC_0027.jpg

And The Shed End…

DSC_0090.jpg

We also went up and visited Lord’s – the Home of Cricket…

DSC_0299.jpg

And got to watch a match…

DSC_0171.jpg

AND, lucky us!  The day we visited they allowed the spectators down on the field, which they haven’t done in like 10 years.  You can’t see it here, but we are walking on the historic grass of Lord’s, barefoot…

DSC_0201 copy.jpg

Let’s see. We also visited Abbey Road…

DSC_0359.jpg

Yep…that is THE crosswalk

DSC_0361.jpg

We had pasties (which were a very, VERY close second to the pasties Aunty used to make – they were so good!)…

DSC_0103.jpg

We had a few pints at a few pubs…

DSC_0144.jpg

We stayed here…

DSC_0485.jpg

And here…

DSC_0552.jpg

J. indulged me while I swooned in love with London phone booths…

DSC_0413.jpg

DSC_0579.jpg

And flowers…

DSC_0429.jpg

And churches…

DSC_0446.jpg

DSC_0518.jpg

And cute little streets I must live on someday…

DSC_0582.jpg

We visited my old stomping grounds…

DSC_0527.jpg

And tried to peek in the windows admired the window treatments of the flat we lived in…

DSC_0514.jpg

We did some shopping at the Portobello Road market…

DSC_0464.jpg

We got in trouble for taking photos of this street (outside Kensington Palace – but it was still worth it)…

DSC_0502.jpg

We may or may not have sung a round of ‘Chim chiminey chim chiminey chim chim cher-ee!’ – I mean, tell me this doesn’t look like a scene straight out of Mary Poppins…

DSC_0384.jpg

We pretty much enjoyed the best of London…

DSC_0589.jpg

Continually falling in love with the architecture…

DSC_0523.jpg

The history…

DSC_0402.jpg

And all the beauty…

DSC_0385.jpg

I can’t wait to go back and share it with the girls.
