Emma – full of Grace ~ BSM

Emma G.

Dear Emma Grace –
I often tease that perhaps “Grace” may not have been the best choice of middle names for you, for it seems you might have inherited Mama’s complete lack of physical grace. I don’t want to say you are necessarily clumsy, but…take it from your bruise-covered Mama – I think you may need a back-up helmet, knee pads and a first aid kit always in arm’s reach, possibly for the rest of your life.

But in your six short years in this world, you have learned something that is far more important than being agile, or coordinated.

While we were at a Birthday party on Friday, I watched you selflessly give over half of your loot from the pinata to a girl that had walked away without a single piece of candy. She was holding her empty bag looking a little forlorn and you went up to her, put your arm around her shoulder, and asked “Here. Would you like some of my candy?” And then you proceeded to put half of your candy into her bag.

Tears welled up in my eyes and I found myself breathless as I watched your (completely unprompted) generosity unfold. And I simply could not have been prouder of you.

When you saw that I was watching you share, you gave me a little shrug and smile as if to say, “Eh, it’s only candy.” It gave me a small glimpse at the thoughtful and loving person you are becoming. I was also reminded that the word “grace” has more than just a physical meaning.

And I think your middle name suits you just perfectly, Peanut. You truly are full of Grace.

Love,
Mama

Wicked Wickets

J. has been intrigued by the game of cricket for many, many years now. When I was working in London he came over and managed to scavenge an old cricket bat from the Portobello Road Antique market. At the time I was not entirely sure why he was buying an old, beat-up bat. But now it stands beside our bed and I feel a little safer on weeks like this one, when he is traveling out of town, and that bat is within arm’s reach.

(Note to any potential robbers and thieves – the bat is HEAVY and SOLID, and I’ve been doing the hundred push-up challenge, so keep it movin’. Nothing to see at our house.)

So, where were we? Oh yes. J. And crazy about cricket. So this past weekend he asked us if we would like to go to the Hollywood Ashes cricket match.

Crickets? Yes! I want to see crickets…

Who can say no to crickets? Plus there were some celebrities slated to be there. And it was free. So off we went.

(This is Addie’s non-stop “skip” caught on camera. For some reason she has been led to believe that she is a great “skipper” and proceeds to skip everywhere we go now. For the record, she is not really all that coordinated in the skipping department, but it is awfully cute.)

Imagine Em and Ad’s surprise when the “crickets” looked like this…

And this…

But they quickly discovered the bounce house that was set up, and pretty much just spent the rest of the afternoon jumping their little legs off.

The bit of match that I got to see was pretty interesting.  And it got MUCH more interesting once J. found a quick little fact/rule sheet so I knew what was actually going on.  Plus (and I didn’t take any photos of them!) they had pasties! Mmm….not nearly as good as my Aunty’s – but they were tasty.

And Daddy ended up buying a practice set (a new bat, ball, and wickets) and is now planning on teaching his little crickets how to play.

A “Tiny” Tyke on a Trike ~ Best Shot Monday

Our little “Triker” in her first trike-a-thon.

As she was racing around the track on Saturday, I caught myself yelling “Go, Tiny!” And I thought, “she is probably really going to hate that nickname in a few years.”

Plus, she is anything but “Tiny,” anymore. And she was not even that “Tiny” when she was born. But when she came out she seemed just so much tinier than our two-and-a-half year old who was at home waiting to be a big sister. J. kept calling her “Tiny” and, I guess, it just sort of stuck.

Tiny tyke on a trike

Even though she is pedaling fast towards being four-years old (a little too quickly if you ask me!), she is, and always will be our sweet, little “Tiny” Rosey-Toes. And she did us proud on Saturday.

And, all the pieces of my triathlon relay team is now complete. Em can run, Ad can bike, and Mama will swim. Perfect.

Hello…summer?

There is nothing like the feeling of sun on your face and sand beneath your toes…

hello...summer!

I know technically summer is a few months off, and many of you are still waiting for signs of spring.

So it probably feels a little unfair that we had an amazing, as “summer-like” as it can get, type of weekend around here.

Today it was 95 degrees, and tomorrow we are supposed to hit 100 in the valley.

Hello, summer!

Beautiful Hope ~ Best Shot Monday

Hope

Beautiful hope.
I hope that she gets the chance to grow into the beautiful person I know she will be.
I hope I can leave her, and her children, with a cleaner planet filled with amazing beauty.
I hope that I can instill in her the ability to see and appreciate that beauty.
And I hope that I can see that beautiful look in her eyes for a very long time to come.

How many girlies…

…can you fit in a hammock?

4_in_a_hammock.jpg

Do you think the cousins are having a good time? Yes. I think possibly so.

We are soaking up as much of Aunt Meesh and the cousins as we can, while we can. And although I have well over 700 photos to go through, this one is my favorite and my Best Shot Monday for today. I think it speaks well to the complete joy we are feeling that they are here with us.

Make sure to hang around over at Tracey’s for a bit, to catch some other fun shots.

Through the girls’ eyes

My friend Christina did this little meme with her cutie last week and I was very curious as to what kind of answers I would get from my two hooligans. So here is what my girls think of me…

(I interviewed Addie earlier today before Em got home, but I did Em while Addie was running around, intermittently yelling out what she had answered and I think she might have influenced a few of Em’s answers, like the first one especially.)

1.What is something I always say to you?
Ad: Please don’t chase the cats.
Em: Be nice to the cats.

2. What makes me happy?
Ad: Not chasing the cats
Em: Cleaning up

(Although I do love a clean house, the actual “cleaning up”  –  does not make me happy by any means.)

3. What makes me sad?
Ad: Crying
Em: When you went on vacation and daddy, Addie and I had to stay home

(Riiiiiggght. So very sad. I cried the whole weekend.)

4. How do I make you laugh?
Ad: With tickles
Em: Make funny faces at us

5. What do you think I was like as a child?
Ad: You were in a crib
Em: Just like me?

(I dunno? Nana? Papa? Was I “just like Emma” when I was little?)

6. How old am I?
Ad: Um. Bigger than us.
Em: 36

7. How tall am I?
Ad: Taller than Smokey and Tiger
Em: 8 feet?

(Addie might be a little closer on this one!)

8. What is my favorite thing to do?
Ad: Play Bingo with a zingo
Em: Have carrot cake with us

(While I do love Addie’s favorite game and carrot cake, they might have missed the mark on this one.)

9. What do I do when you’re not around?
Ad: Go to work
Em: Go to Starbucks

(Both very true. Sometimes I do both at the same time!)

10. If I become famous, what will it be for?
Ad: Having Addie
Em: Us (pointing at her and Addie)

(Apparently I am going to have very famous children?)

11. What am I really good at?
Ad: Work
Em: Taking care of us

(Ooh, point for Emma!)

12. What am I not really good at?
Ad: Gymnastics
Em: Whistling

(Both VERY true.)

13. What is my job?
Ad: Work on your computer
Em: To work on the computer

14. What is my favorite food?
Ad: olives
Em: carrots

(While I like both olives and carrots – I would not ever say either is my favorite food! Right now, I’d say my fave food is avocados/guacamole.)

15. What makes you proud of me?
Ad: When you help me
Em: Taking good care of us

(Oh, yeah. That makes it all very much worth it.)

16. If I were a cartoon character, who would I be?
Ad: a mom one, named Carrie
Em: Junie B. Jones

17. What do you and I do together?
Ad: Play
Em: Go out on Mommy dates and to the movies

18. How are we the same?
Ad: I don’t know
Em: Our hair

(Addie kinda lost interest at this point…)

19. How are you and I different?
Ad: I don’t know
Em: our clothes

(See?)

20. How do you know that I love you?
Ad: You tell me & then you kiss me a lot
Em: Because you are always with me

21. Where is my favorite place to go?
Ad: Disney
Em: Old Navy

22. What is one thing you wish you could change about your mom?
Ad: Being a big kid
Em: To be nicer sometimes, when you get mad

23. What would your mom do with a million dollars?
Ad: I don’t know
Em: Go shopping

24. What do you wish you could go and do with your mom?
Ad: Play
Em: Have a girly date at Islands

The girls may get their wishes since it looks like in April the projects are going to be pretty much non-existent. So much less work, and much more time for play. Although it will also mean less money (so I cannot spend as much time shopping!) – I think it is a very worthwhile tradeoff! Now I’m going to go work on “being nicer” when I get mad…

The girls

Smokey’s spot.

Smokey’s favorite spot on “her” chair.

dsc_0077

She was our first “baby.” I can still remember picking her out of the bunch in that old barn almost fourteen years ago. And attempting to give her a bath (or five) to get rid of her fleas. And then her attempt to singe all of the whiskers off of her face when she got too close to a candle. And the many cross-continental flights she took with us on our moves. And introducing her to her the much detested Tiger cat (although I think they grew to secretly love each other!). And the way she would run from the furthest corner of the house with a chorus of “meows” when she would hear the whip cream can get uncapped.

She was such a good kitty and we are just trying to remember all of those good things today. But I have a very heavy heart when I look at her empty spot. She will be so very missed.

Summertime? ~ Theme Thursday

Stacy asked for some summer reminders today.

This isn’t completely “summer-y,” since when we visited the beach yesterday it was only low 60s, and the water was frigid! (Yeah, Addie found out first hand, as she fell headfirst into a wave!) – But it is sunny, there are blue skies, and proof that summer is a-comin’!

Frolicking
