This & That Thursday

Let’s dive in, shall we?

  • Remember last month – our month of “June Gloom?” You couldn’t just tell me to keep my big, complaining mouth shut? Well, it always comes back to bite you, I’m hear to tell you. Because, July? It has been H-O-T. We are on our way to the beach right now. It is usually 15-20 degrees cooler there, so hopefully we can find a little relief there.
  • Plus. It doesn’t really feel like summer until you spend a whole day in the sun and surf and head home to get the sand out of…well, out of everywhere.

us_molokini.jpg

  • Finally got a few photos from our dive trip up. J. took hundreds, so I just went quickly through the first trip to the Molokini Crater and pulled a few out. I still have all the videos and a few hundred others from the Lanai trip, too. All in good time. You can see the few I weeded out over on Flickr.
  • Due to the lack of good programming on the TV this summer, we have found a bit relief on the Discovery channel. We have been watching Deadliest Catch for quite some time now, totally hooked, but we just watched The Colony. Have you seen/heard about this show? It is wicked. Check it out if you need a good TV fix. Also…Shark Week starts next week. Sweet…
  • da_dum_da_dum.jpg

  • This heat is messing with my head. Making me tired and unable to think. I’m out of here. Until next week.

Crafty Tuesday

Hello, my crafty peeps! A happy Tuesday to you all. I am completely in a sewing zone, but figured I had better take a break for a few to post something for our Crafty Tuesday today.

I got invited by my craft-aliscious friend, Jamie, (the one who gave me the book – my current obsession!) to a private paper crafting party this past weekend. So after a decadent breakfast we ventured over to PaperSource and had a little paper fun. By the way, the PaperSource is my achilles heel. It is the most amazing store and I always find a million things that I cannot live without.

Speaking of which, why did nobody clue me into the amazing world of embossing? I think I might be in love with embossing. Just a little.

We embossed some cool cards and envelopes…

DSC_0009

And we also learned how to do envelope lining, which I will most definitely be doing a lot of from now on…

DSC_0004

DSC_0006

And a few others…

DSC_0011

I LOVE this one. We used chalk stamppads for this…

DSC_0007

One of these days I will prepare a little ahead of time, and maybe actually take some photos in the nice natural daylight so that they actually look decent, instead of scrambling around at the last minute on Monday night. For now, back to the sewing machine!

Whatchu got for me today?

Waterlogged…

Well Addie is, at least. Emma? I had to practically drag the girl out of the pool by her hair this afternoon. I really think she has gills. So, a few more pool photos, if you can stand it. I’m sure it won’t be the last of them, although it might be if Addie has any say in it.

“Is this day my last day of swimming with Miss Carrie, Mama?”

I kid you not, those were her very first words out of her mouth this morning, before “G’ Mowrning, Mama,” even. (Which she always starts the morning cuddle with.) She just got so nerved up and anxious during her swim lessons – but she can actually swim very well. When she is relaxed and messing around, she is just fine. But get her in those lessons, where she is being told what to do…yeah, that doesn’t go down so well.

The very last time she climbed out of Miss Carrie’s pool today. Can you see the teeny, tiny smile?

DSC_0295.jpg

Meanwhile, I don’t think I got any real photos of Em this afternoon. She came up once for air and I got this one, and I caught maybe one off of the diving board. The rest of the time I could just see flashes of hot pink and black.

DSC_0264.jpg

She was promoted to the Strokes class for next cycle. I was going to take the next 2 weeks off, but how can I deny her such great (cheap!) exercise and fun? Plus she wants to join the swim team with the kids across the street next year, so we need to work on some form.

So, for at least another 2 weeks, our laundry room is going to continue to look like a swim locker room.

DSC_0234.jpg

Right now I’m off to go take a break from swimming for a date night and J. and I are going to see Harry Potter! Very excited. And then tomorrow you can find us in the pool again. And Sunday? We have a date with the neighbors…and their pool.

This & That Thursday

Whew! We have made to Thursday. The weekend is in sight. Here’s the randomness that is rolling around up there:

  • Swimming is the most amazing invention. I don’t know if it is the exercise or being out in the sun all day, but it makes for two very exhausted girlies. It is 7:20pm, (I’m writing this Wed. evening) and there are – count ’em – 1, 2, girls ready to pass out, all tucked into their beds for the night. God bless swimming.
  • After swim lessons today we hit the local high school pool for their open swim with some friends. Emma’s friend Audrey convinced her to go off the high dive. Yes, the HIGH dive. I figured she would get out to the end, turn straight around and crawl back down the ladder. But, nope. She charged right out to the end, didn’t even slow down, and bloop…into the water she went. (By the way, this pic was not the high dive. But it was the second of three pools Em swam in today. And I’m pretty sure this ended as a bit of a belly-flopper!)

DSC_0113.jpg

  • Addie is jumping off of the diving board during her swim lessons, too. She cries and says “I don’t want to,” then Miss Carrie convinces her that she needs to try, and she does finally do it. Miss Carrie will ask, “Now wasn’t that fun?” and Addie will just nod and say, “Yes. But how many more do I have to do?”  But, I don’t care. She is jumping off into the deep end and getting herself to the side of the pool. That is all I was hoping for. She’ll figure out how fun it is. Eventually.

DSC_0027.jpg

  • Due to the hotness and swimming excursions, our Summer School Project ’09 has been a little light for the past week or so. But I’m being surprisingly (for me!) Zen about the whole thing. Normally I’d be freaking that our schedule is being disrupted, things are not happening like they were planned to be. But I’m okay with all of it. We are flying by the seat of our pants and just enjoying summer while we have it.
  • That said, we are learning about money, saving, and opening new savings accounts in “school” tomorrow. Timely since Mommy is also working on a household budget. Again. This makes what? Budget v.16? Yeah, at least once a year I decide we are going to have a budget. We’ll see. Maybe the 16th time’s a charm?
  • I do know I’m going to need to pad our grocery budget or Em is going to eat us out of house and home! I thought that only happened with teenage boys? Cripes. The girl is going through a serious growth spurt or something. She is just constantly on the prowl for food. Thankfully she has good eating habits, but she has finished off the baby carrots, bananas, TLC crackers, and almost a gallon of milk. And that is just in the past two days.
  • And we’ll have another hit to our budget for next month – we are squeezing in one more little trip before Em has to start school. (Have I mentioned lately that she is going to be a FIRST GRADER? No? Well, she will happily tell you about it if you forget to ask.) We are heading to Chicago and Michigan to see friends and family and J’s little bro get married! All very exciting. So friends if you are around in August, let us know and we’ll try to catch up with you all when we are there.

And that is about all I have time and energy for. Apparently the sun and swimming has done Mommy in as well.  Have a happy Thursday!

Crafty Tuesday

Maybe we should title this CT – Christmas in July.

I have six months of projects ahead of me, thanks to my friend Jamie. She found this amazing book, and being that our birthdays are semi-close together, she bought one for me and one for herself. So we are on a serious sewing mission.

DSC_0002

The book has gorgeous photos, lovely vintage fabrics, and is simply brimming with inspiration.
Every page I turned I thought “oh, I need one of those!” Like these cool desk organizers…

DSC_0014

Or how nice would this be to curl up under on a cool winter evening?
(Although it is hard to think of that on a day like today when it is a scorching 95 degrees!)

DSC_0006

I know Tiger and two little girlies that would love some floor pillows like these.

DSC_0007

Or a quilt for their bed like this.

DSC_0010

And how much do you love this robe?

DSC_0013

Or these lounge-y pants?
(I think I spend a good 60-70% of my life in lounge pants, so they should at the very least be stylish, don’t you think?)

DSC_0011

But my favorite is (and my first project will be) – this apron.
I love aprons, but oddly enough do not have any cool ones, and I am an extremely messy cook/baker!
(And this fabric is AWE-SUM!)

DSC_0009

So I’m making a deal with myself. I’m going to make one of the aprons for myself first – I should definitely do a trial run, don’t you think? And then I’ll make TWO other things to give away as Christmas presents. Then I can make something for our house, and then TWO more Christmas presents, and so on. I figure by Christmas I should have a pretty good stash of handmade and cool gifts for everyone.

Family and friends: if you think you simply must have one of these, or have a preference for any of them – lemme know!

Before I get to those, I have to finish up a few other gifts. Addie and Emma picked out this great fabric and we are making a gown for my friend Vic. She was diagnosed about a month ago with Inflammatory Breast Cancer. She has begun the fight of her life and we are hoping this will help during all of the endless hospital visits. It’s getting there, all pinned and ready to be zipped up – I promise it’ll be to you soon, Vic!

DSC_0015

I also organized all of my scraps of fabric late the other night so that I can make one of these fantastic Birthday banners for Em’s best friend, who also happens to be the daughter of Jamie  (who bought me the very cool book above). She is a crazy, crafty lady – so it has to be pretty good. Anybody have any experience with this Heat-n-Bond stuff? Anything I should know before I get all into this project?

DSC_0017

So that is it for me today. Nothing concrete, but lots of inspiration. Lots of plans. What about you? Anything crafty to share and inspire us?

Holding our breath ~ Best Shot Monday

Last Friday was a pivotal moment in our house. Addie took her maiden voyage across a pool, by herself.

She can swim. And we are all so proud of her – including her biggest cheerleader, Em.

At the beginning of the week, when she started lessons, it looked a little grim. Her instructor said, “Wow, she is really stubborn, isn’t she?” as she handed me back a writhing, screaming, temper-tantrum throwing mess, that sort of resembled my daughter.

But the difference between Tuesday and Friday is simply astounding! This weekend we had use of our neighbor’s pool and she practiced and perfected her little seal-like underwater sprint. And mugged for Daddy and his underwater camera…

Smile - You're underwater!

Why didn’t someone tell me that this swimming thing is just so easy!

It's just so easy!

Aloha!

I’m totally still on island time, if you couldn’t tell. We have been home a week and I’m just getting around to writing about our trip. I must say that the restorative and restful nature of this trip has definitely lingered longer than most vacation effects usually do. Of course I’m only speaking for myself – I’m sure that J. and Nena are not feeling very relaxed at work right now and have surely lost that vacationin’ feeling already.

So, without further ado, the quick-ish version of our vacation with few words and many photos:

“Aloha! We made it, we made it! Aloha!
There was a little singing and skipping in the Kahului airport after the long afternoon and evening of travel.

DSC_0006.jpg
Which quickly gave way to a big time crash-out in the car. And getting carried up to the hotel room.

DSC_0012.jpg
But we were all up and anxious to get going the next morning.
(And yes – the clock really did say 5 o’clock. A.M. when we all got up the first day!)

DSC_0027.jpg

Below is the view off of our balcony that Addie is enjoying.

DSC_0830.jpg

So what should we do first?

DSC_0154.jpg

We pretty much voted to hit the breakfast buffet! The buffet was incredible – everything you could want and more.  The girls and Nena ate there everyday, J. and I missed it a few days when we had early morning dives.

Plus you got to enjoy it in the dining room that had these huge retractable doors/shutters. So you ate overlooking one of the little pools and waterfalls, but it felt like you were eating outside.

DSC_0038.jpg

Of course that also means you get visits from little birdies looking for a handout.

DSC_0394.jpg

Next it was off to explore and find the real draw for any hotel…the pool!

DSC_0028.jpg
Found it. It was a giant, amazing pool. Complete with waterfalls, tunnels, waterslides and a safe little kids area. I’m amazed that I don’t really have any photos of the other side – the kid side – especially since we spent a major portion of every single day down there.

DSC_0039.jpg
When the pool got old, we would wander a few feet to the beach…

DSC_0059.jpg
and run from the waves…

DSC_0061.jpg
…or find treasures.

DSC_0148.jpg

When we got real ambitious, we buckled everyone in…

Bear hitching a ride
…and took a roadtrip or two.

This was north of Kanapaali, after the state road ended, it is essentially a one lane road.
Mountain on one side – cliff and ocean on the other.

DSC_0168.jpg

But the views were amazing.

DSC_0204.jpg

And we found a little village, home to a shack that boasted the “Best Banana Bread on the Planet.
It was good, I’ll give it that, but…Eh, I’ve had better. 🙂

DSC_0176.jpg
The Old Kahakuloa village was still pretty neat. I loved this old church.

DSC_0181_vintage.jpg
Then we had to stop at the stretch with all of the rock statues. People leave these little monuments with rocks precariously balanced on top of one another out in the field…

Rock statue beach

…some were more daring, out on the edge of the cliff.

DSC_0229.jpg
Naturally, Em and Ad decided they would build monuments as well.

DSC_0233_2.jpg

DSC_0238.jpg
I don’t know – it looks less like a statue, and a little more like just a pile of rocks.

addie's rock pile

We also did the road (halfway) to Hana one day. Although it was a little cloudy some days, it only rained on our way back to the airport, the very last day. The Maui upcountry is in a severe drought, and I’m amazed at the lack of waterfalls. That is the one thing I remember from Maui when we were here before. We did find a couple little ones…

DSC_0457.jpg

…don’t they look like they have had enough?

And then we headed back and had dinner in Paia at Mama’s Fish House.
The girls waiting for the hostess to find a table for us.

This is Mama’s beach. I could have just hung out there all day.

Mamma's Fish House beach

The girls found a place to relax, at least as much as they will allow themselves to relax.

DSC_0589.jpg

Relax was the key word for the week. I mean I finished three (3!) entire books on the vacation.

J. and I did do some diving  (which was amazing – one of the dives is my favorite #1 dive we have ever done – I’ll have to post the photos/videos this weekend from that!) so it was a little more ambitious those days, but the rest of the time…we did nothing, but relax.
And it felt sooooo good. We explored the hotel when we wanted to – the gardens were really nice (all the flower photos on Flickr are from the hotel grounds!).

DSC_0127.jpg
And there was all kind of wildlife, penguins, parrots, fish and – flamingos! Addie’s favorite.

DSC_0124.jpg
Ad and Em trying to imitate the flamingos.  (They already copied the flamingos diets! Shrimp, shrimp and more shrimp!)

DSC_0123.jpg

J. had the amazing find of the week, though. He found a new-ish restaurant on the beach the last night we were there and we got a prime spot to watch the luau that was literally in front of our window. So we got to see some hula dancing.

DSC_0726.jpg
I’d say the vacation was complete.

DSC_0735.jpg

Okay, I want to go back. I’m going to stop now – but there are plenty more photos on our Flickr stream and I’ll be adding more as the weekend goes on.

Alooooooha!
