Crafty Tuesday

One layout. That is all I have managed to do in the past week – or two, or three…but who’s counting?

I got this paper in this scrap-of-the-month thing I belong to. I think I got it a few months ago, but as soon as I saw the paper and some of the embellishments I knew it would be perfect for Em’s first day of preschool. It matches her outfit perfectly.

(Click for a bigger version, as always.)

I know the next two weeks I am not going to get anything “crafty” done, but please check in because we are getting a few more takers, and somebody will have something with all the holidays going on, right? Ladies? Hello?

What do you have to show this week?

Thankful ~ Day 9

The countdown is on! Single digits until Thanksgiving. And only four days until we leave for Michigan. There is a lot of excitement going on around here. And a lot of running around, on my behalf, to try and get everything done before we leave. So today I am thankful for my personal Mac technician and tech guru, J. May I never make a joke about him being a geek again.

He fixed the problem on my Mac last night. This is very important because now I can actually work today, and if I have to, while I am in Michigan. I know it is his least favorite “chore” when he is home, but I so appreciate his help. I could do an entire month of “thankfuls” listing all the reasons I am thankful for J., and probably still have many leftover for the next month, too. He is that good. But today I hope he knows how very thankful I am for his technical skills.

A little snip here, a little snip there. ~ Best Shot Monday

I really like this pic of Em, even if it is a little “senior portrait” looking. Do you notice anything strange about the photo?

emma.png

Yeah, me either – until we were at the Pier yesterday and her little wispy “bits of bangs,” (which I thought were just more crazy bangs) were kind of “dampened” to her forehead because of the mist from the ocean. And there was a definite jagged “slant” to them, almost as if…they had been cut.

J: Did she, or someone, cut her bangs?
M: No, I think she has some weird bang growth…hey…wait a minute. Emma! Did you cut your hair?
E: No, Mama.
M: Did somebody else cut your bangs.
E: Um, no.
M: Did you? We aren’t going to be mad, we just want to know.
E: Yes. I did when I was in the playroom.
M: Honey! Why did you cut your hair?
E: My bangs were in my way. They were in my eyes, so I cut them off.

*sigh*

It really is hard to argue with logic like that.

Thankful ~ Day 10

Today I am thankful for country music.

There, I’ve said it. I really do like all kinds of music and my iPod is a crazy, eclectic mix of stuff.

And maybe it is just my hillbilly background coming out, but there is something about those country songs. They make you stop, think, and realize how short our time on earth is.

I remember when I was pregnant with Emma,on a roadtrip to see my family, and I heard Kenny Chesney’s the Good Stuff song and bawled for a good 10 miles after I heard the part that goes –

Was the sight of her holdin my baby girl.
The way she adored that string of pearls,
I gave her the day that our youngest boy, Earl,
Married his high school love.
And it’s a new t-shirt saying, “I’m a Grandpa!”
Being right there as our time got small,
And holding her hand when the good Lord called her up.
Yeah, man, that’s the good stuff.

Okay, so I was pregnant. But man, that really is “good stuff.”

Or the time, sitting in my dining room with my mother-in-law and sister as we all cried to Martina McBride’s, In My Daughter’s Eyes. I still can’t listen to this part without tearing up –

In my daughter’s eyes I can see the future
A reflection of who I am and what will be
Though she’ll grow and someday leave
Maybe raise a family
When I’m gone I hope you see how happy
she made me
For I’ll be there
In my daughter’s eyes

Oh, there are a hundred more examples I could give. Tim McGraw’s, My Little Girl (definite tear-jerker when you have two little girls!) or Billy Dean’s, Let Them Be Little –

So let them be little,
‘Cause they’re only that way for a while.
Give ’em hope, give them praise,
Give them love every day.
Let ’em cry, let ’em giggle,
Let ’em sleep in the middle,
Oh, but let them be little.

I could go on and on.

And then I had the CMAs on last week while I was working and Kenny Chesney performed that new song of his, Don’t Blink.

That dude has some seriously good songwriters on his payroll.

Don’t blink
Just like that you’re six years old and you take a nap and you
Wake up and you’re twenty-five and your high school sweetheart becomes your wife
Don’t blink
You just might miss your babies growing like mine did
Turning into moms and dads next thing you know your “better half”
Of fifty years is there in bed
And you’re praying God takes you instead
Trust me friend a hundred years goes faster than you think
So don’t blink.

My mother-in-law called to make sure I had heard it and told me I had to watch the video. If you can watch that video without getting a little weepy, well…more power to you. But I can’t. I can’t even though I have already watched it a few times and know exactly what is coming up next.

After an especially long day, where I am counting the minutes til the girls will be in bed, um…kind of like yesterday, I only need to listen to one of these songs and it reminds me to slow down. Enjoy them while I can. So for that I am thankful.

Thankful ~ Day 11

Yikes, I’m going to slide this one in today, right before I start on posts for tomorrow.

Today I am thankful for our weather here in LA.
When we moved out to California everyone would always ask – What did I miss? Did I miss the snow? And although I do enjoy snow on that first snowfall, and especially the two weeks around Christmas, I’ve found that I wouldn’t actually say I “miss” it.

But, it isn’t always sunny in LA. Okay, maybe 90% of the time, it is. But, take today – it was almost midwest “fall-like” weather. I’d always loved fall growing up in the midwest. The crisp days, breaking out the sweaters, that “chilly” smell that seems to be in the air, and of course the changing of the colors in all the foilage.

And we had all of that today. It was “sweater weather,” temperature in the 60s, even a little drizzle. Of course, we also spent part of the morning on the beach and are now curled up in front of a fire. We kind of have the best of both worlds here. I am thankful.

Green Goodness Giveaway

I have found the Crunchy Domestic Goddess‘ blog and she always has some goodies and fun giveaways going on. Right now she has one that is near and dear to my heart!

apcleanthumbnail.gif

She is giving away some Lily’s Garden Herbals all-natural household cleaner. I’m very excited. As you may recall, I have been trying to switch our household over to all “green,” natural products. (I am still looking for a laundry detergent – had a good suggestion the other day which I aim to try, I’ll give you the low-down after I decide if it shall replace our Tide.) I checked out the Lily’s site and it has all kinds of yummy products, besides the cleaning products it also has holistic health and aromatherapy goodies.

Go over and enter her contest. Even if I don’t win the CDGoddess’ giveaway, I am going to have to try out some of the products. Plus added bonus for those of you with no Trader Joe’s or Target access, you can order them online and they are relatively cheap!

Just say Yo!

I like to “join” things, to well…belong. I thought I would end up joining the NaBloPoMo thing this year. I remember it from last year, when I had just started my blog and thought it was a cool idea, (It is the National Blog Posting Month, for those of you who do not know what it is. You post everyday in November.) even though my Bloglines is so full, I can’t keep up with all my blog reading!

But in the end, my fear that I wouldn’t actually be able to post everyday, caused me to not do it. How is that for teaching my children good, hard-working values? If you don’t think you can do it, well…just don’t try!

Nah, that’s not the case. I just have to start saying “no” to some stuff. I can’t seem to say no to the work projects, especially at Christmas time. And with the traveling, dance costumes that need to be made, dance recitals, and just the general busyness that the holidays bring – I like to think I was being realistic instead of lazy in not taking NaBloPoMo on. Even though, I usually post nearly everyday anyhow.

I did join a group of ladies over at In the Trenches on a month-long endeavor of another sort, though. This one is more out of necessity since I have committed to doing the triathlon in a mere three and a half months. Trenches is calling it ExNoYo!

exnoyo.jpg

Exercise for the month of November Yo! Fun, yeah? The rules are just that you need to commit to 30 minutes of exercise a day. Since I am technically supposed to have a “rest” day – I’ve decided my rest would be walking, pushing the double-jog stroller (with kids is a good 70-80 pounds!) to the park and then chasing them for 30 minutes. Probably a better workout than I do at the gym some days.

This is one obligation I think I can stick with. It’s not too late to start! Want to join us? There is a cool button for your blog in it for you!

Thankful ~ Day 12

Today I am thankful for Saturday mornings. I have written about it before, but I love our Saturday morning “tradition.” We always go get bagels and coffee (Addie always says, “Nooo, big kids don’t drink coffee, Mama! Milk. Banilla (vanilla) milk!”) and just hang out as a family. It is my absolute favorite time of the week. Plus it is the start of the weekend. An added bonus.

I think I actually started loving Saturday mornings when I was a kid. My dad and I would watch Saturday cartoons and he would let me have “coffee” with him. Mine was a little “shot” of coffee and the rest was milk. (I turned out fine, don’t worry. No stunted growth here. For the record, we also never had car seats, would run and play outside for hours at a time, cram 4 kids to a seat on the school bus. Remember all the crazy stuff that we did when we were kids?)  I’m pretty sure that first coffee drink is the reason I like so much milk in my coffee to this day.

So today I am thankful for Saturday mornings. And this morning is also a “Football Saturday Morning.” I’m also thankful our team recovered from our miserable first two losses and having a great Big 10 season. Go Blue!

What are you thankful for today?

A Tasty Turkey Treat

Emma clearly gets her culinary skills from me.

turkey.jpg

Her recipe for a Thanksgiving turkey as narrated to her teacher at school today.

Ingredients: vinegar, ketchup, potatoes and turkey.

First you put the vinegar on top. Then the potatoes, then the turkey. Then squeeze ketchup on the Turkey. Put it in the oven to cook. Cook for 60 hours at 70 degrees.

Simple. And Dewischous!

Thankful ~ Day 13

Today I am thankful for “cuddles” with Emma. The few nights J. was away this week, Em ended up sleeping with me in “the big bed.” I complain rather loudly about sleeping with her, but really it is all for show. I love it when she sleeps with me. It means I don’t get to stretch out and take over the bed. It means I don’t get to read before I turn in. But, besides J., there is nobody else in the world I would rather snuggle with than Emma.

Her sweet, hot breath on my cheek. Her little, contented, sleepy sighs. Even the feel of her pointy little feet in my ribs. They are all happy reminders that she is there. And I know she is just as happy to be next to me, as I am next to her.

Last night J. was coming home, so I had to put her to bed in her own bed and I was just a wee bit sad. But we “cuddled” a bit in her bed and as I was hugging her, I told her “I love you.” Then she ran her hand through my hair, clung to me tightly and whispered, “I love you so much, Mama.” I am so thankful for those miraculously sweet cuddles and whispered proclamations. It is those things, those cherished, breathtaking moments, that nobody can ever fully prepare you for.
