Crafty Tuesday

Oh, I am so s-t-r-e-t-c-h-i-n-g for it today.

My parents are coming this weekend, so instead of crafting and doing crafty stuff…I’m trying to get our household in order. (Please, you know how that is…I’m not the only one who cleans like a maniac before family comes, right?)

So my cute dresses are still pinned together, but not sewn up. However…I did do some painting yesterday.

Courtyard painting

Of course it was spray paint,  on my patio set.  Surely not very artistic, but it sure does make a difference on the patio furniture. Instead of white, dirty and a bit rusty…it is sleek, polished and black! I think it looks really nice against our wrought iron gates.

And we have been doing a little more gardening, but I did not get pics of that. Plus, until our plants grow…there isn’t much excitement there.

We are however growing some other fun stuff that I do have photos of…
A bug infestation...
We’ve got bugs! Addie got a caterpillar and a ladybug habitat for Emma for her birthday. And the eggs/larvae came this week. So we are babysitting the baby bugs and watching them grow until we can release them into our garden.

I told you it was a stretch today…how about all of you? Any good stuff to show?

Crafty Tuesday

Just barely squeaking a CT in today.

I have not had a lot of time to craft fun stuff this week…again. I did put together some thank you notes for Em, but they look very similar to the invites and the other party stuff.

crafty.jpg

Maybe you sent Em something for her birthday, but you haven’t received one of these little thank yous? Aye…it is coming. I am trying to instill the importance of writing thoughtful thank you notes into Em. So she is writing all of her notes herself, under some guidance from me. And remember even though she is a superstar, she has an incredibly short attention span. So we have been doing a few thank yous each night. By summer break we should have everyone done! Ha.

And when not trying to do thank you notes, we have moved our craftiness outside since the weather is getting so nice. We had a flower bed next to the courtyard that has always aggravated me. It had three big, nearly dead, plants that I think must have been in the allium family since they were so very stinky. And they were clearly old and needed to be divided – probably 5 or 6 years ago.

So we ripped them out last weekend. And instead, finally got some new citrus trees. J. has been wanting an orange tree for awhile, and I’ve been wanting a lime tree. So we got one of each and another tree that is a cross between a tangerine and lime too. We got dwarf trees – so we can keep them in pots for awhile and then Addie and I went looking for some pretty plants to put around them.

crafty_garden.jpg

This is so not a very good photo since I ran out at the very last minute last night to take it…and our avocado tree is shedding all of its’ flowers right now, so the bed looks messy. But once all of our plants fill in a bit, we’ll take some better photos to share. All I know is that it smells heavenly in our courtyard right now. All citrus-y and orange blossom-y. Mmmmm….

We also finished planting our herb garden, and just one tomato plant this year and strawberries. We still have our cucumbers and Em’s bean plant from school to find a spots for. I have a feeling that will be our task for later in the week when it cools down a little bit.

What about all of you? Any goodies to share this week?

Crafty Tuesday ~ Easter Edition

I had such high hopes and expectations for Easter and spring crafts. Easter cards! Spring wreaths! Cute almost-summer sundresses! I have the makings for all of them.

And then? Somehow Easter snuck up, and flew by me, and I’m standing on the other side of it with nothing, nada, zilch.

So perhaps we’ll get some Happy Spring photos and cards made someday. But at the rate I’m going…I wouldn’t hold your breath.

But, my friend Christina gave me permission to count dyeing Easter eggs as a “craft.” So I’m taking it!

And while I’m at it, let me tell you all about how it doesn’t always pay to be organized – and the best laid plans…well, they don’t always work out as planned.

For instance, even though you buy Easter egg kits a month in advance, you’ll still need to actually find some time to use those kits to color some eggs.

Dyeing egg-ys

And also, even though two of the 18 eggs you are boiling crack and explode, doesn’t mean that the other eggs are in fact “hard boiled” enough to eat. (They sure look pretty, but Ewww…runny yolks!)

All the colors of the rainbows

And another hint? That cute kit with the little roller brushes at Target…yeah, pain in the neck and total waste of time!

Precision work

And no matter how many times you tell your 3-year old to not wipe her hands on her shirt, she’ll continue to do it, even though there is a washcloth within three inches of her hand. (I’ve got photographic proof on this one, Addie!)

I did use my napkin

And also? When you find an amazing sale on cute Easter dresses for next year, take into consideration that your little “weedlings” may sprout an extra inch or two. With dresses it is always okay to be a little long, but a little too short is treading on some dangerous ground.

At the very least, you should probably try them on before Easter morning. Before you are running late. For Easter mass. Of course.

Easter girls

And last, but not least, you’ll never get a good photo when you really want one. This last photo was the best photo I could conjure up of my two little sugared-out bunnies. I have about 100 outtakes. And this is the best.

*Sigh*

But we did make it to mass. It was beautiful, and we spent the remaining day with just our little family and did a little gardening. So in the end? It was all perfect.

So come on…show me all of your perfect craftiness this week!

Crafty Tuesday

I only have one wee thing to show again today. And…I’m sure you are thinking, “hmmm….doesn’t it look very similar to last week’s invitation?”

And, yes, it does. I made up these little notes for Em’s party favor bags for her birthday lunch that we had today.

Treats for the sweets

We found some little plant-your-own-tree pots, some butterfly attracting flower seeds, the mandatory bottle of bubbles, and some little butterflies, ladybugs, and dragonflies. So we carried on the little “garden theme” in our favor bags. They were fun.

But that is really the only thing I’ve been able to do this week. I’ve got sundresses cut out and ready to be sewn for the girls, but my sister is here (in case you’ve forgotten!) so perhaps we’ll get to them next week.

I’ll have more pics from the lunchdate tomorrow – in the meantime, show me your crafts!

Crafty Tuesday

Only one thing to show today.

We are busy preparing for Aunt Meesh and the girls’ visit (on Thursday), Em’s little birthday deal (next week), her actual birthday and Easter (also both next week!). So we are busy, busy little bees around here.

These are the invitations that I made for Em’s birthday lunch for next week.

Em's Birthday Card

I got the idea for the “garden” and then wanted it to be a little 3-d like. And since I only had a few invites to do, I printed them out, cut out each piece separately and used the little block adhesives to make them pop off the page. I think they turned out pretty cute. Em really likes them, so that is all that really matters, I guess.

Anybody else have some crafty goodness to share today?

Crafty Tuesday

It does this Momma’s heart good to watch my little budding artist. If you recall we have seen glimpses of her artistic greatness in the past. And she just continues to impress me with her constant creativity. Every corner of our house is littered with scraps of paper, pictures, drawings, and notes, basically…little pieces of Emma.

I decided to get my canvases and paints out on Sunday because I have been promising the girls that we would do it, and more importantly because Addie needs some new artwork on her walls now that her baby bedding has been replaced with her new kitty quilt.

But most of my day was spent just in awe of my artiste. She is good. And she has some serious talent…if I do say so myself. She has a lot of confidence in her drawing and painting, she can look at something she wants to draw and she will draw it. And she does it with such a steady and fearless hand. It really is fun to watch.

And her first piece…

And her second…

DSC_0005.jpg

Notice, they are “signed” pieces, too! Em told J. that artists have to sign their names to the painting. (Although usually they are quietly signed down in the corner…but nonetheless!)

And J. spent pretty much the entire time cleaning brushes out for Addie. And you can see that it really helped keep her colors separate in both of her pieces…

DSC_0001.jpg

I haven’t finished my two pieces, I still need to put the finishing touches on them, but I’ll post them when they are done.

How about everyone else? Any good stuff to show today?

Crafty Tuesday

Oh, hallelujah! I actually have stuff to show today! I’m so excited – so let’s get to it.

And, if you might be expecting a bag from me…ahem, say if your name might be Blueberry or Aunt Laura…and you might want to be surprised as to what your bag might look like, you might want to stop reading right now. I’m just saying.

So, here we go.

First up, Addie has been asking me to make her a “kitty purse” ever since I made Em’s dance bag. She visited the fabric store with me the other day and I just followed her around and giggled at her pure delight and her exclamations of “Ohhhh, look at this pretty one Mama!” I think she may have inherited my love for perusing aisles and aisles of fabric.

She actually found this fabric and declared it the one for her kitty bag. So I put a little one together for her. And what do you put in a kitty bag? Lots and lots of kitties, of course!

DSC_0002.jpg

I maybe should have made the bag a little smaller. I think at one point she had six cats in there while she lugged it to the gym. I do love the coordinating fabrics we found, the gingham, the striped, and the inside fabric.

Addie was all smiles, and Marie seems to be enjoying it, too!

DSC_0004.jpg

And, like I mentioned above, I had a couple of other bags that I desperately wanted to finish and get out to my very patient friends. I found a fun green tomatoes fabric that I thought was kind of spring-like and earthy and decided to use it for these two bags.

Plus, I think I finally got the proportions right for a reusable shopping style bag. It seems like a good usable size, although when my two, lovely models hold them – they do look like they might be a little large and unwieldy.

Ladies, you’ll have to let me know what you think when they arrive in your hot, little hands!

Anyone else have some crafties to show today?

Crafty Tuesday (Or how about we just talk Disney?)

Yeah, I pretty much have a bunch of excuses this week. Again. I guess I am in a serious crafty slump. I have pieces of bags all over, but none of them complete. I have all kinds of ideas for the photos I have printed out, but not one page has been scrapbooked. And I haven’t even been able to bake in a couple of weeks. So, no photos of pretty cookies or treats, either.

We decided to give up cookies for Lent. I figured that is one thing that would be a sacrifice in our house. I also kind of threw in brownies, baked sweets, etc. I know myself pretty well…I could just see my gears clicking and the justifications flowing, “Brownies are not technically cookies, right?”

So I am not baking, at least not sweets for our house, until Easter/Em’s birthday.  And I realized during last week’s very long week…I apparently bake when I am stressed out. All I wanted to do was crack open my chocolate chips and make something.

So, instead? J. and I decided to take the girls on a little mini-vacation. (Thanks again for the help, Uncle Jeff!) And we went to “the Happiest place on Earth!” And, you know what? It totally worked. We came home Sunday night all refreshed and happy.

Maybe it was because it was a much needed stress release, or the fact that we now know some good “tricks” for getting around the park and it was hardly even crowded, but I think this weekend was the best time I’ve ever had at the park.

Last time we went, Em and J. decided to make it our mission to go on every attraction at the park. Em was in charge of the map and deciding what we were going to do this weekend.

Studying the map

She did a great job, too. I think we made it into the single digits after this weekend. So we have less than ten rides on our list (out of 80!) that we haven’t been on. AND, I found a new favorite ride. I had never been on Peter Pan’s Flight…I think the line is always long and I assumed it was like the Mr. Toad and Snow White ride, so I never really pushed to ride it, but holy cow! It rocks. I think all of us loved it just a little. We also did the Pirate’s Liar (used to be Tom Sawyer’s Island), and it too – really cool. We also saw the HillBillies show at the Golden Horseshoe, which I also loved! Disney knows how to put on a good show.

Combined with some good ‘ol family time, it was a great weekend.

DSC_0200.jpg

We did have to sprinkle in a few of our favorites as well, like Pirates and Small World and Addie actually talked Em into “being brave” and going back into The Haunted Mansion. While we were waiting in line, look who joined us…

Nuns. At Disney. Going into the Haunted Mansion?

No, that isn’t kids dressed up for Halloween – that is an actual order of nuns that were at Disney, making their way into see the haunts. I almost couldn’t believe my eyes – I was holding Addie when I spotted the nuns, and J. was quick and grabbed my camera that I had over my shoulder and just held it up and shot. We saw them several times throughout the day and they seemed to be really enjoying themselves. I guess everyone really does love Disney!

And I’ll end with my favorite photo over the weekend, just because I can. And I can never get enough of these two together.

DSC_0196.jpg

I just love these sweet girls.

What was everyone else up to this weekend? Any craftiness? Or maybe just some fun diversions that kept you from crafting?

Crafty Tuesday

Yeah…so…about last week. I kinda forgot to post anything, and honestly didn’t really have anything to post anyhow.

And this week? I don’t have anything to post anyhow.

I do have some stuff in the works (Aunt Laura and Carey your bags are coming!) but since I didn’t get them out in the mail, I don’t want to spoil the surprise by posting them today.

I am finally getting through all of the feeds in my reader from last week and getting caught back up, so I am anxious to see if you all have some goodies for me to check out this week.

Now, on to some other business…

A certain little someone in our house is turning six in a month. My God, did you hear me? Six! SIX!

What are we going to get her for her birthday?

Almost six?!

Besides new jeans (because she has grown like three inches in the past month) or a brick (for her head to make her STOP growing) – what is something fun that six-year olds like these days? Any ideas?

Crafty Tuesday

I have been spending all of my free time in my craft room for the past two weeks.

Not that I have any crafts to show today…but I ask you to behold the awesome-ness that is my new and improved scrap/craft area. Clean, organized, ready and waiting.

Everything in a place

It is a Type A’s dream, let me tell you.

A few months ago, we bought a more practical and useful desk, so my scrap cubes got condensed over into the corner and they have been languishing over there, ever so unhappily with my infrequent visits. Then I went in search of some ribbon to make a collar for a stuffed animal and realized – the amount of ribbon I have is…riDICuLOUS!

So, I broke down and bought the clip-it-up ribbon organizer. I figured there was no way I was going to get the time, supplies and gumption together all at the same time in order to fashion some sort of ribbon holder, so I spent the money, and just look at it there on the wall!

Ribbon! Ribbon! Ribbon!

And once I had organized all the ribbon, it started a snowball effect. Now I had an empty drawer and an empty box, so I started organizing the other drawers and pretty soon…every brad, every piece of paper, every embellishment had a new home.

And I started finding little trays, jars, and cans and re-purposing them. The tall can here is from my mocha powder, and the shorter, fatter one used to have Zingerman’s macaroons in it. (Mmmm…Zingerman’s. Macaroons.) I just covered them with some pretty paper and now I have some cool new storage tins.

New holders

I am on a roll. If I were a closet or a drawer in my house, I would be a little scared right now – or maybe excited, I’m not sure which! One thing is for sure, it makes me so anxious to get in there and create something. Now!
