Resolutions.

It is that time again…to look back at the last year while we make plans for a promising new one.

2011 was a pretty great year around the Voris household. We officially have a “household” of our own since we got to buy our house;  J. continued to enjoy working for Uncle Walt, we continued to enjoy the perks of him working there including a fun trip to Orlando; the girls continued to thrive turning 8 and 6 and blossoming into social little butterflies, and we have all had a very healthy and happy year. I’m not quite sure how we can top that, but we are certainly going to try.

As far as resolutions go…bah. Do I ever really follow through on them? I always have good intentions, but usually fall short. Then yesterday I was listening to NPR and they had, what I thought was a brilliant idea – have someone else make your resolutions for you! I tried to get J. to make some for me since he knows me best, but his response was – “so this is what we are doing this year? Fighting?” And then he continued on with some sort of “you don’t need to resolve to do anything better…” blah, blah, blah. He is such a kiss-butt!

So, since J. doesn’t want to make any resolutions for me, anyone else want to give it a shot? You guys know me pretty well, what do you think I should work on this year? Remember just because you resolve something for me doesn’t mean that I’m going to actually follow through on it, but I might. Especially if you are watching…

Have a safe and happy New Year! We’ll see you in 2012!!

Christmas Hangover.

I just realized I did not post one picture or one word about our Christmas this year.

I am over here knee-deep in Christmas decorations that are heading back into their crates for another year and I figured I might want to write a bit – or at least post some photos – to have recorded proof that Christmas really did come to our house this year.

In fact, it came fast and furiously for weeks on end. But once the last treats were made, the last gift was wrapped, and the final carol sung in the Christmas pageant – our Christmas was perfect. It was full of family time, relaxing in jammies all day and even…gasp(!) a nap for Mama for a bit on Christmas afternoon. Exactly what we all needed.

But let’s back up a bit. After we got that pesky school stuff out of the way, we prepped for our Christmas pageant. The dress rehearsal was a little scary (isn’t it always?) but both of our angels knew their lines and were ready to go come showtime.

DSC_0139

Angel #1 got to join chime choir this year and she was very excited to be ringing Mama’s favorite song (Angels We Have Heard on High.)

DSC_0068

And both Angels sang their hearts out. Unfortunately, Addie is behind Miss Suzanne for a lot of both songs, and I’m a horrible videographer, trying to juggle around and get them in, but you can see them in two of their songs here and here if you would like. I can hear both of the girls at different points in the video, their sweet little voices. They did an excellent job…even though they were exhausted.

DSC_0094

(Poor tired little Em is on top middle – Addie is lower right. Yes, the little Filipino girl in the bottom left does have a wig on…strange, no?)

But strangely as soon as the pageant was over they found a surplus of energy that had been hidden and we all let a little crazy out.

DSC_0125

I did manage to rein my family in for a somewhat decent photo before we headed off to look at Christmas lights and prepare our stockings and Santa letters.

DSC_0132

My favorite street – a few blocks from us. They light up all the big trees up and down both sides.

DSC_0169

I would just like to add for the record that Mama and Daddy were in bed by 11pm, maybe 11:30, on Christmas Eve. We were kinda prepared and able to enjoy a minute of peace.

DSC_0161

And we were in bed before Santa visited, and he did come!

DSC_0184

I heard the girls get up at 6:30 on Christmas morning to use the bathroom, but nobody came creeping into our room. So I laid there for about 15 minutes and then got up to investigate. The girls were snuggled on the bottom bunk playing Old Maid. When I said “Merry Christmas – what are you girls doing?” – Emma said, “Well, it wasn’t 7:00 yet, so we didn’t want to wake you up – but can we go downstairs, now??” Sweet girls. I forgot to tell them that our “Do Not Disturb Mom & Dad Before 7am” rule doesn’t really apply on Christmas Day.

We all got some a-maize-ing loot.

DSC_0222

Em was most excited by the Wicked tickets that Santa brought the whole family. (Ok, Mama was pretty excited, too!)

DSC_0194

Addie pretty much liked all of her goodies – but this one from Daddy is sure to be a hit.

DSC_0246

The best gift of the day – there was a very elaborately wrapped box with a great handmade tag, To: Mom, From: Jelly Bean and Peanut. And the box had 72 cents. It was all the change Addie had in her purse, so she wrapped it up for me. Love those two.

The aftermath.

DSC_0249

So we took our time cleaning it up, indulged in some Zingerman’s chocolate bread, played outside at the park, took a little nap, grilled dinner outside and finished the day off with our whole family in our bed starting Harry Potter – book #2.

It was a practically perfect in every way Christmas.

Crafty Tuesday ~ Etching Glass Edition!

Hello there…we have a bit of a Christmas hangover around here, so moving slowly.

I had many questions about the glass etching that the Birdies attempted a few weeks ago, so I thought as I was finishing up Christmas gifts last night (um, yes…the day AFTER Christmas) I would snap some photos and show you how we did our glass etching. And trying to take photos in our house at night just solidified our quest for new lighting…that is on the menu for next week while Daddy is home. Apologies for the not so great photography yet again. Perhaps if I actually crafted in the daytime it would be a nice change, huh?

So for glass etching…it all begins on the computer. Using the software that came with Eva (our Silhouette machine) I design what we want etched.

DSC_0266

And then we plug in Eva and let her do her magic. Cut out the designs on adhesive vinyl, by the way – this is a good way to use up any scraps of vinyl you have, although I did a lot of etching last night so I stacked all my designs into one sheet.

DSC_0268

While your vinyl is cutting out, wash and dry your glassware. It is really important to not get any oils from your fingers where you want to etch, the etching cream doesn’t stick to the glass if it is dirty.

DSC_0270

When your vinyl is cut and glassware is clean, you start “weeding” out the design. You essentially want to remove the vinyl anywhere you want etched. It is very handy to have a dental pick for this step.

DSC_0273

In this one – the black parts are where the glass will be protected, and the white parts will be etched. I wanted the “V” to be glass, but an etched circle around it, and another etched, larger ring around the circle.

DSC_0275

Once you have your designs weeded, you’ll need to use transfer tape, which is clear tape you put over the top of the design that allows you to transfer your design to the glass. We used painter’s tape as a guide so that all of our designs on the wineglass set would be even. Putting a piece of tape at the rim of the glass, I then lined the top of my ring up with the bottom of the piece of tape. It is a sort of inexact measurement, but it works.

DSC_0278

While you still have the transfer tape on the glass, (remember no fingers on the glass!) rub down the design really well. I mean, REALLY WELL. Especially around the edges, using something like a credit card, make sure the edges are really adhered otherwise you will have some bleeding from the design. Carefully peel off the transfer tape, and then you are ready to etch.

This is the etching cream we have been using. It is kinda toxic and has a million warnings all over it, it is essentially acid that eats glass, so yeah…be careful with it.

DSC_0281

I also like to surround my edges of adhesive with painter’s tape too…just to be safe since I’m a little bit of a sloppy painter. Apply a nice, even sort of thick application to the open vinyl areas.

DSC_0282

If you can lie your piece down, it helps with the running of the cream. This obviously isn’t always ideal since glasses are round and like to roll, but if you can prop it up like so, it definitely helps.

DSC_0283

Let the cream sit for 10-15 minutes and then wash off with warm water. For stronger glass you might want to leave it on longer, I left it on some glass ornaments I did for 30 minutes and it still didn’t etch as well as the wineglasses did. You might need to experiment…get extra glasses!

And…voila! Handmade, personalized gifts that you’ll want to keep yourself!

(This one is for our friends who make amazing lemon drops!)

Let me know if you try to etch some glass! We’d love to see your creations, too!

Crafty Tuesday

Well, as you might have guessed – I’m working on Top Secret Christmas gifts over here so there isn’t a lot to show. I guess it is pretty safe to show our Christmas card though, since most of you should have received it by now.

I was terribly disappointed in the printing of the card. I got a great Groupon from Mixbook and I couldn’t resist. No assembling! No printing myself! So since we officially bought the house this year, I wanted to take a pic with the house…but of course featuring the real stars of the household. It was a perfect day and the photo looked great but when it came back it was terribly dark. BUT…done. And very reasonably priced, so I need to stop complaining.

and back…

ccard_back

I like that you can design your own cards (which I did) but I can’t say I recommend the actual printing. Okay, seriously. No more complaining.

Along with cards and getting presents out the door, the Two Birdies attempted a culinary creation last week. These ended up being so fun…

DSC_0166

…so fun in fact…

DSC_0256

…the girls are making them for their little “gift” to all of their classmates. Aye. Addie is insistent that all her snowmen have a very surprised “O” mouth…because you know, they are melting! They honestly are very easy to make, just pop over to Truly Custom Cakery and see for yourself.

Oh and just because you asked (you did ask, didn’t you?), the Grinch tees were a hit! Our 3rd grade class was by far the best looking group of the Christmas program.

DSC_0130

And as to how we made the tees, (I think Maggie asked?) we cut each “piece” of the Grinch face out of flocked heat transfer vinyl, using good ol’ Eva (Silhouette machine!) and then ironed them on. Yes. Eight pieces each tee, near 60 tees. No wonder we are completely insane this week. Thankfully we used black fabric paint for the whiskers so that saved even more (tiny!) pieces.

Hmmm…I take that back – this might be the best looking group at the program. What a cute bunch o’ girls, huh?

Crafty Tuesday (Insanely Late Edition)

It is still Tuesday here – so technically I’m sliding it in, just under the wire.

We have been crazy busy over the past week or so! I finished up a Birthday gift for a 6 year old…

DSC_0002

I finished up those little gift card purses for Aunt Laura…

DSC_0007

That tutorial is SO coming…it is just in pieces because my Birdie friend and I decided that it would be smart (!?) to offer up our services to the entire 3rd grade. You see, our 3rd graders need a Grinch shirt for the holiday program, so…doing the shirts for a few friends turned into almost 60 tees…

DSC_0152

Oh, why and how do we get ourselves into these things? J. refers to us as “Lucy and Ethel and our hair-brained ideas,” and yeah…I can kinda see it – some days. But surely the kids are going to look back and appreciate the time it took us to put all of these together to make them the standout grade at the pageant, right?

DSC_0151

Yeah, right.

My Birdie Jamie and I DID also tackle glass etching last week! And this really was one of our better ideas – our wine glasses at the Christmas party were a definite hit.

DSC_0659

For the stemless wineglasses we numbered them – so no more lost wine glasses! And we did an ice bucket, too.

DSC_0657

We are so not done with this project. Making another trip to IKEA next week, anyone like something etched for Christmas??

And We’re Back To Our Regularly Scheduled Blogging…

…thanks for hanging in while we resolved our technical difficulties, not the least of which included no power for three long days!

I actually did have stuff to post for Crafty Tuesday today, despite not being able to use my sewing machine for the better part of the week, but the no power thing really took the wind out of my sails. It has taken me all week so far just to get fridges and freezers (argh!) cleaned out and restocked, the mountain of laundry back to a manageable size, normal activities resumed, and not to mention some sort of catch-up on sleep.

For those of you who may not have heard, we got hit very, very hard by our not-so-friendly Santa Ana winds last Wednesday night. I spent the entire night on the sofa watching our avocado tree being whipped around by 95mph winds and willing it to not snap off and come through our french doors or picture window.

I actually heard our neighbor’s tree fall down – here is what it looked like in the wee hours of Thursday…

DSC_0214

And it wasn’t the only tree down making our street impassable.

DSC_0222

Our street looked pretty ravaged, and it still wasn’t nearly the worst of it. Pasadena and Altadena up into the mountains are just unbelievable. If your yard didn’t have a big tree down in it, then it pretty much just looked like this…

DSC_0227

Because of our climate and the fact that we get very little water, apparently the root structures on our trees are VERY shallow, so it was not uncommon to see this every few hundred feet…

DSC_0225

Keep in mind this is pretty much just our block, which like I said, was nothing compared to other parts of town. Although when the kids found out that it was a snow day (as in there’S-NO school!) they hung around our street to watch the action…

DSC_0230

We were incredibly lucky. All our trees survived – although our avocado tree got pretty beat up, I think he’ll survive. AND, oddly enough…all of our ornaments on the tree except for two stayed on!

DSC_0216

Yes, we are all in our pjs still. They were warm at least, and we had no heat – remember. The Santa Ana winds also brought ch-ch-chilly weather. This morning when Daddy and Em came back from their run the temp was a balmy 37 degrees. Yipes. I think we struggled to get to 60 today. Thankfully our heat came back on Saturday night, but there are still people without power even tonight.

Like I said, we are very lucky and blessed that everyone is safe and our house survived. It could have been so much worse.
