My wandering mind.

I just can’t seem to focus on work today. I need to. I really need to get all three projects done before we go home to Michigan next week, but I just feel an overwhelming urge to procrastinate. I have 4 hours this afternoon to power through my work, and instead I am sitting here blogging, reading blogs, online shopping…anything to avoid the real work at hand.

Ad and I had a beautiful morning together, maybe that is why I am feeling all relaxed and unable to concentrate. We dropped Em off at school and then enjoyed our “mommy and me” time together. It was so nice and she is such an amazing kid! Of course I knew that already, but she really blossoms and is such a funny, sweet girl when the focus is solely on her.

And…big news! Pants dry all morning and a pee-pee on a “big” potty – not a potty chair, but an honest-to-goodness toilet in a public restroom. When we were leaving, she was “high-fiving” me as I told her how proud of her I was, and all she said was, “Emma!” I asked, “Should go pick up Em and tell her?” And A. said (so sweetly), “Oh yes, Mama!”

When we did pick Em up, it was this very lavish reunion like we hadn’t seen her in three days instead of three hours. The girls were hugging and Em was talking a mile-a-minute about her day and her new friend. And Addie looked up at Em and said “pee-pee on the potty, Emma!”  And so I told Em that Ad had dry pants and had gone pee-pee – and I was so unprepared for Em’s reaction, I almost cried.

She put her arm around Ad all protective-like and said, “Oh, Addie. I’m so proud of you!” and then gave her a kiss on her cheek, as Addie just sat there beaming up at Em.

It may be one of the most precious moments I have ever witnessed this far between the two of them. Addie so excited and proud to tell her big sister, and her big sister so genuinely proud and excited for her.

Dear God, I love those two girls.

Heard around the house this weekend…

(Addie running through the upstairs with Daddy’s keys…)

D: Hey, Swiper! Give me back my keys.
A: NO! Not Swiper, Daddy. I’m Dora!

E: No, Addie is Boots the monkey!

Then all of us fell out laughing.

I think that Addie’s little role-playing and just her knowledge of all things “kid,” has definitely been enhanced by her big sister. She walks around nearly all day dressed up in the “rella” (Cinderella) blue gown and one shoe. It is always one shoe…I think she is taking the “lost one glass slipper thing” a little bit far…but she never puts them both on! It is crazy how much she has picked up from Em. Emma didn’t know anyone if they didn’t live on Sesame Street or in Blue’s neighborhood until she was three or so. But little A. has been catapulted into Em’s world and she can, and will, tell you the difference between Little Einsteins and The Wonder Pets.

Now really, who needs to watch reality TV when we have our own little cast of fairy tale and cartoon characters right here?

————–

Don’t know any of the characters mentioned up there? Really?! Um, ok. Then you clearly have not yet been acquainted with the bonita chica, Dora the Explorer. She has a sidekick monkey, named Boots presumably from the large snowboot-like apparel on his monkey toes. And they are always on little missions when “Swiper” the fox manages to foil their plans by swiping something – hence his name. It is a favorite in our house right now, but Em is learning a whole lot of espanol from it, so I am not complaining too loudly.

First Day of School…

Well, she did it. The earth did not open up and swallow any of us today. We all lived to tell about it – me included. My big girl made it through her first day of school.

em_school.jpg

J. had some dental appointment stuff, so he was actually home and took her to school with us, which was great. (Look how “big” she looks!)

em_school2.jpg

I got a little choked up when I saw her name on the list telling her which room was hers. But I managed to keep it together. Again, so happy J. was there, I think I would have been a much bigger, weepy mess if he wasn’t cracking jokes and making me smile.

em-school31.jpg

We found her classroom. Her teacher is an older, sweet and very gentle lady who I really like a lot. Em made a beeline for the books as soon as we got her checked in, and barely even noticed when we left.

em_school4.jpg

(SO excited!) I got a little (ok, a lot) teary as we walked out. But I was ok, I knew that she was in the right place.

Addie, on the other hand, was just trying to figure it all out. Everytime we got in the car she would ask, “Emma? Mama! Emma?” And they had quite the lovefest this afternoon, so happy to be reunited. I think A. really missed her big sister.

A. and I snuck back a little early so we could peek in the windows. E. was laughing and having a great time. She looked like she was an old pro and had been doing the “school thing” for years. And of course she did not stop talking the minute we got back into the car.

“Mom! Didyouknowwedidcraftshadsnackswentoutforrecessandthenthebellrangandthen
wehadtolineupandwereadstoriesandhad SO. MUCH. FUN!”

Yeah, I think it was a success.

tomorrow. tomorrow.

I will not break into a rendition of the Annie song, “Tomorrow” because I most definitely do not “love ya, tomorrow.”

Tomorrow is the day my sweet, little, first, baby girl goes to school.

*sigh*

Oh, sorry. I mean…

“Yeah! School is going to be so much fun (it will be) and you are going to have a great time (she definitely will) and make so many friends and learn so many cool things (the possibilities are endless).”

We went shopping for her first day of school today. She got to pick out a new outfit. She picked out a new dress. Naturally. And she told everyone in Target that she is going to wear it tomorrow.

“For my first day of school!” – she practically sang it.

I know she is going to be amazing and it is part of her growing up (and away from me). And I can sit here all afternoon, teary-eyed and tell myself that it will give me much needed alone time with Addie. Em needs a new challenge, to stretch her wings out. To grow. It is so necessary. And it is good.

But why does it have to break my heart so?

More on our Picasso

This is how Em and I spent part of the day…

em_artwork.jpg

Trying to pare down some of the wall ‘o artwork in the air-conditioned, very cool playroom. In retrospect, this should be done without the budding artist standing in the same room.

“Oh, we have to keep that! That was for you!”
“We can’t throw that away, I worked on that with Denise!”
“But I neeeeed that one, too!”

And on and on it went.

We did finally come to some concessions and put away some of her (and addie’s) artwork and recycled the rest. Now we have a clean, blank wall to fill up again!

Our little fishy

This was taken one moment after she bravely went underwater to “stand” on the bottom! (It was a quick little toe touch, but she was definitely under.)

em_swim.jpg

I’m so surprised and pleased with how well Em is doing in the lessons. They are super cheap (through the city of San Gabriel) and the instructors are really great. Em is jumping off the side and swimming to the instructors after only 5 lessons. In the deep pool! Very cool. I only wish we could take more sessions, but they kind of interfere with the summer camp, (No, it isn’t school…just camp, remember?) that starts on FRIDAY!

Heard in the locker room before swim class today…

E: Is it our turn, Mama?
M: Not yet, honey. Be patient.

(20 seconds later…)

E: Okay, the hand is on 11, now is it our turn?
M: Not yet, peanut. The kids are still in their lesson. Be patient.

(20 seconds later…)

E: Mommy…
M: Em, have some patience!
E: I was just gonna ask what patient means.
M: It means you need to wait your turn, be calm, and Mommy will tell you as soon as it is your turn.
E: Oh.

(20 seconds later)

E: I’m being very patience now, Mommy. So now is it my turn?

*sigh*

Sk8r Girl

So there has been a renewed interest in the rollerskates this past weekend. Before we begin with this little story, I think E. is an adorable little imp who will most likely turn into a gorgeous ballerina someday. But in the meantime, the girl has clearly inherited my dreadful clumsiness.

Her first “roll” – literally the second she stood up on her skates – she went straight back down on her bottom. She did finally get the hang of it and made little circles around the courtyard and even got brave and let go of Daddy’s hands, eventually. She just needs a bit lot of practice.

em_skating.jpg

Trying it out on her own.

em_skating_2.jpg

At least she looks good, right?

There are a bunch of other photos in the Flickr account, although I never did get a good “falling” action shot.

What is a little Boop between sisters?

Okay, so although I picked that photo for Wordless Wednesday, I simply can’t not talk about it. E. and A. are the funniest little girls…ever. Of this I am convinced. I am constantly amazed by the two of the separately, but together they are just priceless.

I wish I could just follow them around with a tape recorder every minute of the day to capture all of the funny stuff they say.  This morning I heard…

A: Emma! Emmaaa Gaaacie!
E: Yes,  Babykins?
(This is her  own little combo of Baby and Addikins, she calls A. this when she is being super sweet.)
A: I did it! I did it! Yeah!
E: Mom! Addie went pee-pee in the potty! Addie we are proud of you, now you can wear big girl underwear like me!
(And then she proceeded to try to get Addie to put a pair of her undies on.)
A: Oh, boopy. Bottom, boopy.
E: You have a poopy? Okay, sit back on the potty! Try! I’ll get you a book.
A: Yeths (her little lisping “yes”.) Like titty. Titty boop!

Note: Titty boop is…kitty poop. And we had just cleaned the litterbox out.
Also noteworthy: How old Emma sounds when she talks to A. like this! I know she learns it from me, but it is just so funny to hear her all motherly and sweet. It is much better than when she sounds like a grumpy, agitated version of me!

Look, Ma…

em_dtst.jpg

…no cavities!

Today we braved the dentist and Emma was a champ! The dentist was teasing her and said, “are you sure you have never done this before?” He did a full set of x-rays on her and said she sat better through it than most adults do.

Bravo for our little girl! She looked so tiny in the big chair. But the dentist said her teeth look great, very clean for a 4-year old. Made me feel a little better, at least. Yes, she is 4 (!) and this was her first visit to the dentist. I am horrible about going to the dentist, but I am now determined not to be so the girls don’t develop my bad habits. Especially since they probably got my bad teeth!

em_dentist_2.jpg

But, thankfully we are doing a good job brushing, need to work on the flossing still, and we are done for another 6 months! And at least I got started early on Addie, right?

(Yes, Ad had her teeth “checked” too, obviously no x-rays or cleaning. But she wouldn’t stop clinging to me, or screaming, so no pic of her first dentist appointment!)
