Change(s) ~ Theme Thursday

As I tried to figure out what photo to use/shoot for this week’s Theme Thursday, which is change, all I kept thinking of (and singing) was that David Bowie song, Cha-Cha-Changes. I had to go find it on YouTube…man, that is a really good song!

Anyhow, that song didn’t really inspire any great ideas, but as I was getting ready to scrap tonight I (ahem…) changed my calendar to March. (Oh, don’t give me that! Like you have never made it nearly halfway into a month before realizing you haven’t changed the calendar? What? Oh. You never have? Well, then…you clearly have too much time on your hands.) In my defense, I have a huge whiteboard calendar that has been updated and used all month, it was just the girls’ calendar that hadn’t been switched over.

Anyhow, (again) I could not get over the change in the girls from last year to this year. So then I started going through all of the girls’ baby photos. (That is a great way to kill time, but I’m a bit misty-eyed over here. They were soooo tiny! Sooo sweet!)

So check out the changes in our house in the past five years! –

Books ~ Theme Thursday

Books. A word near and dear to my heart. I love to read, J. loves to read, and I am so happy that the girls seem to be following in our footsteps. We spend many a Saturday afternoon wandering around the bookstore. And when I saw that this week’s theme was Books, I knew that I wanted to capture a moment from my favorite time of the day.

Granted, some nights it is my favorite time of the day because it has been a particularly hard or long day, and I just need them tucked in. And I need some peace. But most nights it is that moment when the girls are all scrubbed clean, their teeth have been double-checked for brushing, they are in their soft pjs, all ready to snuggle and they say, “Can we read in your bed tonight, Mommy?”

It used to be that I would read Ad her books (usually she would weasel four or five Sandra Boynton books out of me) and Em would “listen in on” Ad’s books. Then we’d tuck Ad in, and then I would go read a “big girl” book to Em and tuck her in.

But their reading paths have converged. Ad will sit still for much longer books now and wants to read “Emma’s books.” So we have been piling into my and J’s bed and they each get to pick a book. Addie almost always picks some sort of Princess book, but Emma likes to mix it up. She has been picking some Dr. Seuss books lately, and trying to read some of them to me. We are so close to the next level when Mommy will be replaced and Em will be reading to herself or to Addie.

Until then, I will continue to soak all of our bedtime reading in. And treasure each word.

Make sure to go over and share some Book love with other Theme Thursday photos.

Good Fortune

I didn’t get a chance to take any photos for Theme Thursday today, but if I have to skip one, this is probably a good one to skip. The theme is winter, and well, you don’t all need to be getting any more jealous of our winter.

Today was a balmy 72 degrees, sunny. Beautiful.

But do make sure to stop over to Stacy’s to see everyone else’s winter wonderland shots.

I do have about twenty zillion stories and photos to share, but I am swamped with working on a major project that is due soon and already feel guilty enough just trying to post photos and keep caught up with all my friends and family. Soon…soon…I promise!

Just a fun little game for today before I head out to tackle work, though.

Almost every weekend we go to Pei Wei, one of our favorite places to eat. It is the cheap version of PF Chang’s, just really yummy Asian food. And Emma’s job is to pick out fortune cookies for everyone. A few weeks ago I got a great one that read, “You and your spouse will spend many happy years together.”

Totally appropriate! I loved it. And then promptly lost it, of course.

The weekend before last she picked out these fortunes for us.

The crazy thing is that they all really did fit the person that ended up opening them.

See if you can guess which fortune goes with whom. Keep you busy while I try to get through the mountain of work and chores that are piling up around here. And maybe we’ll make it a little contest and I’ll think of a fun prize.

Contrast ~ Theme Thursday

I know I’m kind of “phoning it in” this week. And I promise an update and many excuses as to why I have not written anything of substance this week (not that it is that different from most weeks!), but I do have a picture to share for Theme Thursday. Today’s theme was any interpretation of contrast.

I was going to play with some b&w photos and work on contrast, and then I saw this on Tuesday –  I thought that this is a pretty cool contrast. How often do you see palm trees and snow in the same shot? Yep, there is snow on our mountains, well, there was anyhow…

Color ~ Theme Thursday

Theme Thursday has moved over to Stacy’s Land. Check out the fun photos on Thursdays and look for the theme for the week, which she posts on Saturdays along with some helpful photography tips.

This week the theme is color. I had intended on going out to shoot some of the “winter” color we have around these parts, and make all of you stuck up in the frozen tundra – jeaaalous.

But, alas, I did not make it out on such an expedition, and since I showed off Ad’s cute hat for BSM, I figured I should use this photo for my color photo. Because if this isn’t a display of how colorful our little Emma is, I don’t know what is!

Speaking of color – I am having a little bit of a problem when I upload my photos to WordPress. It seems to wash them out, a lot. If you click on some of them, you can see the difference in the Flickr photos. Anybody else notice this in WordPress?

Glow ~ Theme Thursday

Every night the girls wait anxiously at the kitchen window. Finally, the next door neighbor will reward their impatience by flipping a switch and inflating her entire yard.

I have been using the promise to “visit” the Halloween Holy Land in order to get the girls to eat their dinner. (Hmmm…do you think she’ll leave them up until Christmas?) They will eat as quickly as they can, race to put their shoes on and then stand at the door, “Can we go now, can we go now? Mommy, can we go visit the Halloweens now?”

So off we go. The glow of the pumpkins beckons us.

Three ~ Theme Thursday

I went through my photos quickly to find one that would fit today’s theme of Three and found this of Three of the cousins snuggling on the sofa at my parents’ house earlier this summer. I love how Ella is staring at her big sister and cousin, and how both of the big girls are looking down. Those eyelashes!!

After I uploaded it I realized that I have my own little theme going this week.

Sweet, sweet Emma.

Note her hand on Ella’s chin here, just as it was on Addie’s chin in the Best Shot Monday… I’m not sure where she got that from (do I do that to her?), but she really is cavity-inducingly sweet sometimes.

Thursday’s Theme: Fade

This week’s theme is fade. Here is my submission…

…my little fading flower. This past Tuesday we had already visited the gym, been to A’s music class, had a little lunch and we were just patiently waiting for Em’s dance class to finish, when I snapped this picture.

Check out everyone else’s take on fade over at Tracey’s. I’m sure a lot of others are busy documenting the fading summer days, but it is still 95 degrees most days here in the Valley, so it still doesn’t really feel like the end of summer to us!

Heat – Theme Thursday

Tracey’s theme for today is Heat.

Around here (where it is pretty much hot all summer long!) the heat has forced us to keep cool by playing in the wading pool, living in our swimsuits and eating tomatoes, fresh off the plant, still warm from the sun.

heat_tt.jpg

Addie has been eyeing this tomato for weeks. And she was so excited to sink her teeth into it when I finally gave her the go-ahead.

For a trippy little blast from the past, check this out…

em_tomato.jpg

Emma, 3 years ago. She was 18 months (about 4 months younger than Addie is here). Same swimsuit. Documentation of her first tomato from our garden. Cool, huh?

This was a non-digital pic – remember those? Shot in b&w and then scanned in with a not-so-great scanner, so the quality is not as great. But I think it is such a cool coincidence. Totally not planned, at all!
