Small Change: Month 10 Wrap-up / Month 11 Challenge

So how did we all do last month? Did we make the Earth a little greener?

This month was, I must admit, an easy month for us. I am a bit obsessed with the whole environment anyhow, so we upped the ante a little bit and I am pleased with our results.

We continued to recycle everything we possibly can. Our center is actually pretty diverse in what it will accept, everything from batteries, any type of plastic to styrofoam, so almost any form of packaging goes in the recycle bin around here. Here is a typical trip each week to the center –

I love that Emma has really gotten into the whole “recycleables center” too. She loves to help me sort the plastics by numbers, which is a good exercise for her. She also is starting to put it all together – that helping recycle, helps the Earth, helps the animals, etc. We saw the movie Arctic Tale a while ago, but she still mentions it every time we go to the center. “We are helping the polar bears and the walruses, right Mommy?” If nothing else, that alone is a very positive effect from this whole thing.

And our trash bin is nearly empty every week! With no more diapers and all of the recycling, we have usually only one bag of trash. One week we forgot to put the bin out and it was only half-full the next week when I wheeled it out to the curb. That alone made me feel pretty successful.

I also worked on ridding the house of anything that may have toxins and/or phosphates. This I was only moderately successful at. I found a lot of the Method stuff at Target to be good and I like the Orange stuff, too. I really dislike the Seventh Generation All-Purpose Cleaner. If it doesn’t have anything “bad” for us and the environment in it – why does it leave a sticky, icky feeling to everything? This challenge will be one that I’m working on for awhile, I think. And no, still haven’t found a laundry detergent I like better than Tide. Will keep you updated on that one. Let me know what you are using and if you have found it to work.

And finally, I am trying to buy organic food as much as I can. My challenge to myself is to shop the farmer’s market more often to buy in-season fruits and vegetables. It is difficult when you have girls that really love blueberries, strawberries, and raspberries, which all have definite seasons. And I’m not crazy about frozen fruit generally. But not only is the lack of pesticides good for the environment, I think the biggest benefit is that they aren’t going into our bodies. So we all win…well, I guess our bank account doesn’t. It is definitely more expensive. Which brings up the whole milk – growth hormone debate. I guess that really is a discussion for another day. Remind me sometime, and we can talk about that.

So onto the challenge for next month, er….this month! We are already 2 days down, I know, but this month’s is a really good one again. Help someone who is not prepared for Thanksgiving. Whether it is dumping some canned goods into the food bank barrel, donating a turkey dinner to a needy family, sending Thanksgiving love and goodies to the troops, or inviting someone to your dinner that might not have a place to go. Anything goes as long as it is helping someone have a happier holiday.

I have a feeling most of you already do something similar to this anyhow. But let’s just take a moment and remember all of the things we have to be thankful for, and then pass a little on.

Small Change #8 Wrap-up and Challenge #9

I didn’t hear from anyone? Did anybody donate some school supplies for kids in need this past month?

I honestly did want to do this one. I kept a lookout for a drop-off area where I could dump some supplies, but never really found one. I was actually disappointed, because if you recall, I have quite an affinity for all things fall, and start-of-school, related.

The girls and I did however donate money to an organization here in Pasadena which helps buy coats, shoes and back-to-school clothes for underprivileged kids in the area. I figure that counts, too, right? Just as necessary as pencils and paper. The organization was at a table set-up outside of the Ralph’s.

Now, I usually really dislike when people sit outside a store and ask for donations. When I am on a mission, dragging 2 children who are usually not pleased to be visiting the grocery store, trying to remember what is on my grocery list, which was left at home on the table, and trying to get in and out of the store before a major meltdown – the last thing on my mind is to stop and dig around looking for a few bucks.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not a grinch. In fact I know we are very fortunate and we try to be very charitable, but I just like to pick when and where I give our donations. It allows me to really know what we are giving is going where I think it is. But since I was seeking out a place to do this month’s challenge, I did stop, gave a listen, donated, and got a receipt – mostly for tax reasons, but also so I could remember the name of the place and could post it.

And now, I cannot for the life of me find that stupid receipt. So long story short, we did it. Sort of. And you’ll have to just trust me on this one. I’ve got no proof.

This month’s challenge I think is fantastic, though! I love the whole “pay it forward” idea.

Your challenge, if you choose to accept it is…

“Do one thing every week this month completely out of the blue for a total stranger. Pay for the coffee of the person behind you in the Dunkin Donuts drive thru line. Stick a scratch off lottery ticket under the windshield wiper of a strangers car. Leave a very large tip for a very small bill at lunch. That one small thing you do could change someone’s life.

Cool, huh? At first I thought, “Wow! We could get some great stories out of this!” But in reality, you’ll probably never get to see the effect your “small thing” will have.

But just think of how you feel when you get a kind word from a stranger, or someone just holds the door for you as you struggle with children, strollers, bags, etc. Doesn’t it brighten your day?

The other day when we were in the grocery store and A. was having a complete meltdown and another (definitely had to be a mom) lady looked over at me and offered up a sweet “been there” smile. I rolled my eyes, shrugged my shoulders and said, “well, she’s almost 2 – what do you do?” And we both laughed and just that one moment, helped me get through the rest of the trip. The rest of the day. And I have vowed to make sure I give that smile now anytime I see a mom battling with her child. Who knows, maybe it will help her get through what would have otherwise been a miserable, tough day.

See how it works? Try it, and come back and let us know if you do.

Small Change Month 6/7

Aw man, I am so far behind. It is the 2nd week of July already!

So a little recap. Last month’s Small Change Challenge was to do a “clean-up” project somewhere. The girls and I cleaned up some trash at Lacy Park one day and they are a little bit obsessed about it.  I’d say A. alone has tried to pick up at least her weight in trash over the past month. We’ve gone through lots of wipes and Purell.

This month’s challenge is equally as simple. You can do just a little or go all gung-ho and crazy. The month 7 Small Change Challenge, should you choose to accept is this:

“Our challenge this month is to give something to charity.  Anything, to any charity.  So, you can log onto your favorite charity’s website and give them a couple of bucks right now and be done with it.  Or you can donate your time, or the clothes your kids had the unmitigated gall to outgrow halfway through the season, or whatever works for you.”

Easy right? So let’s do it! Beth, founder and driving force behind Small Change is donating her hair to one of the charities that makes wigs for children with cancer. How cool is that? So I might not be able to do anything as grand as that – but I’m going to scrounge around and see what we can come up with. How about you?

Small Change: Month 5 Recap and Month 6 Challenge

Okay, I’m waaaay behind this month.

Let’s do a quick wrap-up of Month 5. I “kind of” completed it. The challenge again was to donate blood or sign up for the National Marrow Donor Program Registry.

I really did intend on doing both, but purely because I ran out of time, I didn’t get the donating blood part done. I did sign up to be an organ donor and I did my “swab test” for the Marrow Donor Program, so I feel like I fulfilled last month’s challenge. And I got a lot of comments from all of you saying you did one of the above three, too! So, hooray for us! Little steps, that is all it takes.

This month’s challenge is much easier and I think, even though we only technically have a few weeks to complete it, we should all be able to complete this one. This month’s challenge is to get out there and clean up a local park or playground. It can be as complex as a whole neighborhood clean-up drive or just picking up some trash while your little one swings at the park. Simple right? Let me know when/if you do this one so you can get credit.

Small Change: Month 4 Update

Okay, I’m doing pretty well on the challenge this month (and the month is only half-way over!). I’ve registered to register (to get the cheek swab!) with the National Marrow Donor Registry. If you want to accept this month’s Small Change Challenge, you can sign up with the registry for free between now and May 21st!

Leave me a comment, let me know if you do it! So I can give some props….
