Recovery Mode…

So it took days to prepare and a day and half to recover…who knew throwing a little princess party for a 4-year old was going to be so much work.

I know it seemed like more work than it should have been because I have such high expectations for everything. I really wanted the house to be perfectly unpacked and in order (which it wasn’t), I had a picture of a grand castle cake in my mind (which turned into a horrible ordeal and mess), and although we had Uncle Jeff and Wendy and our very close friends here…it was a little hard not having all of our family and friends here. It was our first birthday that the grandparents, Aunt Meesh and the cousins couldn’t attend.

But despite all of this, we had a great time.  Emma was the most gracious, sweetest little Birthday princess, and I was very proud of her. And I think everyone else had a good time, too. I just put up all of the birthday pics on flickr – including ones that Em took with her new little FisherPrice digital camera. (A Birthday gift from Nena and Uncle Jeff!)

I think it just sunk in. She is really four. Wow.

Entourage

E. has always had “Bear” and “Blankie.” Yes, both. They are both equally loved and both must be present for sleeping and cuddling with. As she has gotten older, both pretty much stay in her bed or on the sofa during the day. She definitely still *needs* to sleep with them, but they don’t go everywhere with her like they once used to. We had searched for a “back-up” bear, bear #2, and finally found an exact replica – but he has never made the cut. Even though he is perfectly clean, not a ratty, nappy spot of fur on him, E. calls him “Icky Bear” and the original Bear is otherwise known as “Clean Bear.” (I know. But it is 3-year old logic. Can’t argue with it.) A while back, “Icky Bear” had been banished to the bottom of the stuffed animal pile in the playroom. Never to be seen from again.

But I think having a lovey (or two!) has helped E. self-soothe, sleep better, and it definitely helps her feel secure, so I am all for it. I’m sure I would feel differently if we were facing preschool and she refused to leave them home, but thankfully we are not in that position.

So when A. latched onto the sweet little teddy that E. picked out for her and brought to the hospital when they met for the first time, I was so excited. Not only that she would hopefully have a little security lovey, but that it happened to be the Bear E. gave her? That is too sweet.

But, Bear has assembled quite the entourage. Bear is now accompanied by Baby (yes, she is always naked, I have no idea where her clothes have run off to), Blankie (the quilt Jeff and Wendy gave her when she was born) and Kitty (the sorriest excuse for a stuffed kitten you have ever seen – he looks like he is missing about 80 percent of his stuffing).

entourage.jpg

The entourage must ALL be present and accounted for anytime we are going to sleep, whether it is for the night or just a nap. And when you go in to get A. up, the entire entourage must accompany her to the next destination, as well. It is getting a big much, let me tell you. Not only do I haul around 24 pounds of real baby, but another 10 pounds of accessories for the cute real baby. I can’t remember now how I got E. to leave Bear and Blankie home. But I need to do some creative coaxing, because we are doomed to losing one of Addie’s “fantastic four” and then we are all in trouble. She left Bear at the gym one day and we tried to do naptime with Emma’s “Icky Bear” (come to think of it, that might be the last time I saw poor ‘ol Icky Bear) and it just was not happening. So I drove back to the gym to rescue Bear so we could all get to sleep that night.

When I put A. to bed I always sing her this little “Good Night Addie” song. And now, yes, you guessed it. I also have to sing four new verses: “Good Night Bear,” “Good Night Blankie,” “Good Night Baby” and “Good Night Kitty.” A. thinks this is great fun and if I try to skip over one, she will hold the excluded toy up and say “Nyt, Nyt (fill-in-the-blank)!” (Have I mentioned that she is a little too smart for her own good?)

Just as I was ready to scream “Good Night Already!” and was closing her door last night, I hear her sweet little voice-

“Nyt, Nyt Mommy, Nyt Nyt Behar, Nyt Nyt Bay-bee, Nyt Nyt Bankie, Nyt Nyt Ki-yee….”

It was in the same tune of the song I sing to her, but she kind of threw all of the characters into one verse. It was so perfectly adorable.

That I was first in that list, totally makes up for the constant vigil in trying to keep all of the entourage safe, loved and in one place.

P.S. My apologies to anyone who thought that this post was about the AWESOME show on HBO also called Entourage. I am quite addicted to the show, by the way. And the first episode of the new season last week was great. So nice to have it back. I think it will have to stand in for the Sopranos when it is finally done in a few more episodes. I will certainly miss the Sopranos, but enough is enough. I try to wait ever so patiently and get so little for all of my waiting. Don’t they know I have serious Mommy Brain and can’t remember what happened last season when it was really on a year and a half ago??

They say the darndest things

Things heard around here this week….

E: Mama, when I am a spider…(pause)
M: Um, yes?
E: When I am a spider, I will wrap bugs up with my web and then I will suck their blood!
M: Um, okay…

(Maybe we need to lay off the Charlotte’s Web, which is our current DVD of choice?)

—————–

A: Oh no! (As she is picking her sprawled little body up off the floor.)
M: You ok, Addie?
A: I ok, Mama. I TUFF!

(And if A. saying that, with her shoulders thrown back looking all proud, doesn’t bring tears to my eyes, I don’t know what will. She is “tough,” but I just want her to need a little cuddling….sometimes!)

——————–

E: Daddy, boys have penises!
D: Yep.
E: And girls have zucchinis!
D: Not exactly…

(I, unfortunately, heard this one secondhand through J.  But I would have paid big bucks to hear him explaining to E. what exactly girls do have, though! Or to see how he kept a straight face after that one…)

Question Tuesday

The few people I have been able to talk with lately have all had the same questions about the house and the move, Em’s birthday, the girls in general, etc. So I thought I would do a little Q & A Tuesday edition, because I’m not sure that I will have a lot of time to get to talk with the rest of you…and maybe you are wondering the same things!

(Okay, it is a little bit of laziness on my part – but I prefer to think of it as, I’m just “simplifying” a little bit!)

Q: How is the new house?
A: FANTASTIC! In one word, it is fantastic. We have so much room and the house is really beautiful. It feels amazing to be back in a house. I keep catching myself starting to tell the girls to be quiet or stop running and I then I stop and realize – “What am I thinking?? Go right ahead. Run to your heart’s content! Make all the noise you want! It is all good.”

Q: How are the girls adjusting?
A: Are you kidding? They walked in and saw their stuff, and well that was just fine with them. “We are living here now, um…OK!”  A. is sleeping through the night and seems very well adjusted – she loves the courtyard and swing, and unfortunately the stairs. (They are very, very hard, Spanish tile as my bottom can attest to. I had a slight tumble down them on Easter. Now I am a bit paranoid about them. But J. put up the gates and we are being pretty vigilant about the girls on them.) Em is having a little bit more difficulty sleeping at night, but hopefully we’ll get her straightened out, too. But during the day, she is loving everything about the house, too.

Q: Which room is which in the pictures?
A:  I fixed the flickr pics! Now you can go through and see the descriptions. And I promised Kim that as soon as the house is presentable, I’ll take pics again so you can see it “lived-in.”

Q: How old/big is the house?
A: I just went on zillow and figured all this out. It was built in 1929 (those of you that guessed the 30s were right on!) and it is 2700 square feet – no wonder it feels so much bigger than anyplace else we have ever lived!!

Q:  Are you unpacked and settled in?
A: Haaaaa HA! Are you kidding me? I’m still trying to figure out what light switch goes to what light fixture! That and change nearly every light bulb in this house. It is old, apparently all of the light bulbs are too, since they all decided to blow out at the same time.

We finally have the important rooms unpacked like the kitchen, bathrooms and bedrooms. Meaning, the boxes are unpacked, but it is by no means “decorated” – we’ll get right on that next.

Q: What did you do about Denise (our heaven-sent nanny/sitter)?
A: Thankfully, it is about the same commute for her – she still takes the train/bus here. Today was her first day back watching the girls and I realized how very, very happy I am to have her. She is amazing and I think they had a great time today. They found the playground down the street – and I had a productive day running errands and getting rugs and things that are virtually impossible with two girls and carseats in the Volvo!

Q: How was Emma Gracie’s birthday? (And also, did you cry?)
A: It was great. She was asleep in our bed yesterday morning and when she woke up she said “Good morning, Mama!” And I said “Happy Birthday, my big 4-year old!” And the look on her face was priceless. “Today?! Today is my birthday? I’m four? I’m four!”  And the rest of the day was pretty fun, too. She got to pick out all meals, and her cake. She got a bunch of fun presents from everyone and I think she had a pretty good day. Plus her little birthday party is Saturday, so we are stretching her birthday out a bit.

And as for “did I cry.” Not really. I did feel a little sad. Especially when I was writing her blog letter. But I am coming to grips with the fact that my baby is growing up. I think. Ask me again when she starts preschool in the fall. Then we’ll see.

That concludes our Q&A for today. And now…back to our regular scheduled blogging.

Happy 4th Birthday, Emma Gracie.

Dear Emma Grace,

At this moment, four years ago I was working through some pretty good-sized contractions, thanking God that despite some pre-term labor scares, we had managed to keep you in your little cocoon until you had reached 38 weeks. I was also wondering if it was possible to keep you in for another 38 weeks.

I was so scared.

em_born.jpg

I was just so unconvinced that I was ready to be a mommy. I was so worried that I wouldn’t know what to do or what to say or how to raise you into a smart, productive member of society.

And four years later, even after having practice with you, and now your sister, too…I still don’t know what the heck I’m doing. I’m still scared. There are many days that I’m not sure I can be a good mommy. And I’m constantly questioning my ability to challenge you and nurture you into an upstanding young lady.

em_face.jpg

But I do know one thing – I wouldn’t trade one moment of it for anything. You have given your Daddy and I so much happiness and joy, we simply cannot imagine life without you. You have also made me a more patient person (well, at least a little more than I used to be). You have helped me to stop and experience the little things in life, the important things. And you have challenged me to be the best mommy I can be.

em_kiss.jpg

As I watch you grow into a charming, funny and sweet little girl I can’t help but feel so proud that you are my daughter. And with your new house, your new school, and your new friends, I just know you are going to have your best year yet. I am so happy to be here to experience it along with you.

Happy Birthday Sweet Gracie.
I love you,
Mommy

But…I want to swing.

I took today’s “Best Shot Monday” pic yesterday after mass while I was trying to coax A. inside to take her Easter attire off. But, she just wanted to “sweeeeng! (Just imagine her saying “swing” in a little high-pitched, insistent voice). That pure look of stubbornness on her face has been seen pretty frequently around these parts lately.

Hoppy Easter!

Wishing all of you a beautiful and blessed Easter.

On our way to Easter Sunday

J. was taking the pic, obviously! On our way to Easter Sunday service – notice the sweaters and jacket…it was a chilly morning here! Which was a bummer since the girl’s dresses were so darn cute. They wore them yesterday to the Easter egg hunt, which was also cold and rainy! But you can see the pics up on Flickr…they are the rain poncho ones!

I’ll get the video from this morning from J’s camera and put it up soon. The egg hunt was successful and the Easter bunny left lots of fun stuff for the girls. Well, one Easter bunny fell asleep on the couch and then groggily helped the other bunny put out the Easter stuff. Nonetheless, the girls had a fun morning, J. made a great breakfast, we went to church and now we are…you guessed it, unpacking some more.

Hope your day was wonderful, too. We miss all of our families and wish we could be there eating and enjoying everyone’s company. We’re sending our love.

We’ll be back tomorrow with Best Shot Monday and…a very special day for some little (oh my goodness!) 4-year old!

I’m back!

Hello all ye faithful readers! I am sorry about the long absence – it was the longest I have gone without blogging since I started this so many months ago. I would have been able to post pics and chaos stories more easily if I had not been in a battle with the lovely cable company for the past two days. But alas, it is all up and running and I am giddy with excitement about being back online. I think I may have a wee bit of an addiction to the internet…it was like going cold-turkey. I seriously needed a fix!

But anyhow, we are all moved in. The girls are running crazy, wild and free in the new place. They barely even minded the disruption. Of course while I was packing and moving all day on Wednesday, they spent the day with their two friends and Michelle and they had the most amazingly fun day. They didn’t stop for 12 hours, and when I went to pick them up and they were all bathed and fed and ready for bed.  Not only that, Michelle sent me home with a full tummy and a full-on dinner for J. and I for the first night in our new home. It was amazing! I can’t thank you enough, sweet Michelle! It made the most stressful week so much better.

I did post pics up to our Flickr account of the new house…I’m still trying to get all of the descriptions updated so you know what is what – especially since I took the pics before all our crap got dropped into the house. I’ll work on that in the next day or two and update the unpacking process as well.

Thanks for hanging out and waiting for my return! We’ll see you again tomorrow…

Sister Secrets

Yesterday E. walked up to A. and told her a secret. She cupped her hands over A.’s ears and A. tilted her head up so sweetly and listened so intently. I was torn, it was the most perfect picture and so wanted to grab my camera, but I didn’t want to ruin the moment so I just sat and quietly watched. It is a picture forever burned in my brain, though.

I could only hear “psst, psss, psst…” but then A. looked up at E. and they both laughed like it was the most delicious secret ever.

I asked, “what are you guys whispering about?”
E. giggling said, “nothing, Mama,” and ran off into the other room.
Then little “Polly Parrot” also said, “nufin'” and ran screeching after her big sister.

It reminded me why I really was hoping E. would have a sister someday. Someone to share her secrets with and someone who would always be her best friend.

Although, they were playing dollhouse after that, and this was the scene I ran across…

Are they plotting to overthrow the management? Or maybe just make Mommy crazy enough that she will jump from our balcony?

Reading is fun!

I haven’t really had much time to snap many photos this past week with the impending move. I did however catch the girls reading…in the middle of all of the packing going on, they were sitting on E.’s torn apart bed each reading their own separate book.

Em reading

(Look at those monkey toes!)

Ad reading

I love that they are so adaptable and (so far) unaffected by the craziness around them. For other Best Shot Monday photos, visit Tracey at Picture This. It is a fun and inspiring way to spend an hour or two!
