Constant Coaxing ~ Best Shot Monday

Trying to get food into a headstrong little girl…

I know many parents have similar eating…oh, lets call them…”challenges,” shall we?

But ours seems to have reached epic proportions, here.

We had breakfast for dinner last night…pancakes, served IHOP-style with whipped cream and chocolate chips, even. What kind of kid can’t choke that down for dinner?

We’ve tried no snacks between meals, no snacks after meals, going to bed hungry, sitting at the table until something has been consumed…it is incredibly frustrating.

It is a good thing that she is so darn cute!

  1. Oh Carrie, I so feel your pain. It is so frustrating. It definitely helps that she is SO stinking cute!!

  2. Ethan would be perfectly happy to exist on milk alone. Lately, I’ve been giving him only water with his dinner and refusing to give him anything else until he eats. It doesn’t make dinner very pleasant, but sometimes it actually works.

  3. It’s been 20 something days since Lent started, and with NO CHOCOLATE in the house since then, that little smear on the corner of her mouth looks mighty tempting.

I s’pose it just got washed off and wasted!!!!, well, better than to be waisted I guess.

She doesn’t appear to be too upset about the whole thing. sometimes that makes it worse!

    Love,
    Dad

  4. It probably would have been better for J. and I if we had done no chocolate at all for Lent here, too. We did no cookies (well, brownies, desserts – esentially baking, etc…) so our choco chips have been languishing in the freezer just waiting for Easter. I thought it would be a special treat…and it was Em’s idea, she took advantage of the treat, but Addie, who is usually our sugar bear, was definitely NOT upset about the whole thing, which DID make it worse!

  5. Cuteness is a good thing, however, getting them to eat is sometimes a challenge. I think that at 3 and half we are just reaching that stage with W.W. Lately he has decided to declare his disgust at dinner time and negotiations often ensue. ;) I have to admit, I’m not adverse to bribery on some nights at all.Wishing you some good eating vibes.

  6. she sure is cute… but i just can’t imagine a kid turning down pancakes!! send her share to bean, she’ll take care of those in no time. (i’m sure she’d gladly send you her pork chops and steak in return.)

  7. I know exactly what you mean. The cute factor is Francesco saving grace as well. I have found that for me no snacks have improved his meal eating, but I know you tried that already. My neighbor would say let her not eat because eventually she will when she is hungry but I have a hard time letting them go so long without food.

  8. Beautiful shots. I know how cuteness saves! I have to say that I marvel at the beautiful stainless shirt-front. We would NEVER have one of those.

  9. Our girls are so similar in so many ways…but this is one battle we don’t have the fight with Nadia. Actually, we have the opposite battle with her. She wants to eat EVERYthing, ALL the time! The kid would literally eat nonstop if I let her. Yep, she’s definitely my daughter! Every five minutes – “I’m hungry, Mom.” Or worse, she just goes and gets something herself and leaves a trail in her wake!

anyway, when did Ad get so big? Especially in that first shot. Eeeks.

  10. she is drrrrreamy!!! sorry you are having such trouble!! this too shall pass.
have you tried letting her choose and prepare her own meals? i know it might be a real pain for you but it might work. god luck!

  11. These portraits are gorgeous. OMG, she is so precious that I’d let her get away with anything.

But seriously, they will eat as their bodies need and when hungry unless there is an underlying medical/physical issue.

    Deep breaths and patience.

  12. My wise sister -in-law once told me that food is the one thing that kids have absolute control over. I wish I had some good advise for you… hopefully, it’s just a phase. Silly Addie!

  13. Oh, I hear ya…why does eating have to be such a struggle???

She’s still a little cutie, even though she is trying your patience. :)

  14. I lucked into a resource that really helped me w/ this very thing-takes the tension out of meals! Ellyn Satter’s book Child of Mine-she advises a division of feeding responsibilities-you decide on the what, where and when to eat-and your child decides on the whether and how much! It sounds too simple to work but it really does. There are other strategies that help, such as serving a known liked food with a new or less liked food… Anyway, it takes the worry out of mealtime and we all enjoy it alot more.

Love your site, and happy meals! Leah
