It takes one to know one ~ BSM

My little bookworm. I don’t know that my love affair with books started as early as first grade, but every time I looked at Em this weekend, I was transported back to a time when I was in the middle of a good book. Impatiently rushing through the other stuff I “had” to do, so I could get back to my book. Making myself sick because I wanted to read in the car. Trying to walk, looking over the top of the book, and read at the same time.

I think I probably said “Let’s just put the book down until we get there and then you can read,” at least five different times over the past two days.

Her class has been reading the Magic Treehouse books aloud. They have a chapter or two left in the first book of the series, but Em came home and finished it on Friday. Then she started book two on Saturday, and finished it during church yesterday.

Yes, I know. Part of me wanted to tell her she needed to pay attention in church, but she is reading. READING! Full on chapter books on her own. And I’ve been kind of quizzing her along the way – she is comprehending it, too. I just can’t squelch that. Plus Sunday school starts next week, which is much easier to focus on than “Mama’s church.”

Then last night we started the ‘Little House on the Prairie’ series as our “bedtime reading.”

FINALLY! The Little House books were my all-time favorite books when I was a girl. I’ve been patiently waiting until she was ready for them. We got through a few chapters last night and when I went to wake her up this morning, she rolled over, stretched and said, “Mornin’ Mama. Tonight can we read Little House on the Prairie again?”

Yes. Yes. YES!

While I was making breakfast, she started on the third Treehouse book.  At this rate I think we are going to blow through the entire public library by the time she is in 3rd grade.

My little bookworm. (Yes, I’m beaming. I could not be more proud.)

  1. So sweet. I loved the Little House on the Prairie book as well when I was young. I also could not get enough of Nancy Drew. I am looking forward to reading Chapter books with the boys. I love Go Dog Go but recently we have read it every night, I think Nicolo’s first real words are going to be “Go, Dog, Go!”

  2. Don’t you just love when your children love some of the same things you do? My kids are a little too young to read, but I’m so eager for them to start so that I can share some of my favorite books with them. Sweet shot!

  3. What great news for bookworms like her mom and her great aunt!! I am SO happy that she is engrossing herself in books (after the things she “has” to do, of course.) There is still absolutely nothing that I would rather do in the whole world than to have the time to read — I never get enough of books! Reading to her early played a big part, I am sure! I raised a bookaholic (I think the official word is “bibliophile”) which is another reason I am so excited for you! If you can ever get to Wisconsin, we should take her to where the Little House On The Prairie author was born and raised. It isn’t too far from here.

  4. Goodness, she’s just like my first born. V likes them read to hear but trying to get her to learn to do it on her own is such a battle. Go, Em!

  5. Yay, Emma. Keep it up. We love the Magic Tree House series. Carter is reading the brand new one right now.

  6. Oooooooooooooh!!!! This brings back memories, and dreams for the future!! I have always been a bookworm, and reading novels together as a family in the evenings is one of my fondest memories. There are some seriously sweet picture books Nadia and I had enjoyed together, but I really can’t WAIT to start reading the chapter books with her. The Little House books will be one of the first series on the list for us, too!!

I just love you and your girls, Carrie!

  7. Three days after we found out we were having two girls, I went online and purchased the complete Little House set. I read the whole series while I was pregnant (and incapable of reading books that required thought.) And I read them all over again about once a year. I can’t wait until I can finally read them with my girls. You’re so lucky that Emma is already there.
